  1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

1.1 About AAH-I

Action Africa Help International (AAH-I) is a regional African-led non-governmental organisation that supports livelihood-challenged communities in East and Southern Africa to sustainably improve their well-being and standard of living. With Country Programmes in Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia. AAH-I has over 25 years’ experience working with communities in conflict and post-conflict situations, including refugees, internally displaced people and host communities. More recently AAH-I has expanded its activities to work with other marginalised communities including pastoralists and urban slum dwellers. AAH-I implements value chain based programs that offer holistic and wholesome approach to livelihood activities as the lead livelihood partner for UNHCR in Kakuma Refugee Camp. These programs analyze structural issues affecting supply and demand and evaluate cost effective and efficient strategies to give groups – which form Micro and Small Enterprises (MSMEs) – a competitive advantage to grow and scale. One of the projects that have been considered for implementation is handicrafts production under MADE51 including beadwork, basketry and designed clothes etc. Thus AAH-I intends to engage the services of a Local Social Enterprise (LSE) to carry out the project activities.

1.2 LEAP Project The project aims at enhancing reliant livelihoods to women and girls in Kalobeyei settlement that will lead to self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods. This will be achieved through skills enhancement and enterprise development of PoC through handicrafts. Specific activities will include identification and recruitment of the target women and girls in conjunction with other implementing partner and in close collaboration with UN WOMEN; organizing them into groups; training them on group dynamics; as well as mentorship and coaching of up-coming business by AAH-I and skills transfer, design, product development, production and marketing by LSE through MADE51 and other platforms. The project will support women’s handicrafts to be able to grow by attracting international markets and established social enterprises in relevant operations and increase the productivity and competitiveness of the products of the groups, hence increased sales and value for money invested. AAH-I will directly support refugee artisans to develop strong groups, support trainings and establish strong field-based production processes that allow refugees to participate in the artisan value chain. AAH-I will work with LSE selected through UN WOMEN (MADE51) who will manage product development of a marketable refugee made product line that they will market and sell through their marketing channels and through MADE51 and other marketing opportunities. The overall aim of the LEAP project is to work with 300 women to achieve resilience through promotion of integrated livelihoods skills developments

  1. OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING

2.1 Purpose

Output 3.1 Select refugee and host community women have increased access to vocational, entrepreneurship and business development skills

AAH-I is in need of a consultant with skills in beadwork, basket weaving and contemporary hand bag designs. The consultant will assist in product design, production of sample products together with the artisans, show them how to cut the materials to size, stich and weave quality products for the market.
2.2 Specific training objectives

1. Train 150 women artisans on basket weaving, beadwork and contemporary hand bag making to the global market standards

  1. Train the women artisans on costing and pricing of the handicraft products for different market segments and preparation of a catalogue
  2. Produce a guide for handicraft product development cycle
  3. Train the artisan women on marketing of the handicraft products.

2.3 Methodology The training should be highly interactive while training the artisans on the specific objectives mentioned above. The 150 women should be able to demonstrate skills in basket weaving, beadwork and hand bag making developed at the end of the training.
2.4 Location of the training The training will take place at Kalobeyei at the Ufundi Ubunifu centre in Kalobeyei village one market
2.5 Duration of the training The duration of the training shall be 15 days as stipulated below:  The training will be in two phases:

Phase 1: Two weeks for training on weaving, beadwork and contemporary hand bag making 1st October to 10th October 2019

Phase 2: Quality assurance and pricing training – One week for costing and pricing & marketing Training – 23rd October to 27th October 2019

2.6 Deliverables and responsibilities of the consultant

i. Prior submission of proposal, work plan, training methodology and tools in accordance to the current practices and standards to be used in basket weaving, bead work and contemporary hand bag making taking into consideration given by AAH-I

ii. Consider feedback form AAH-I and make changes according to AAH-I response

iii. Train the artisan women on the complete cycle of basket weaving, bead work and contemporary bag making.

iv. Liaise with AAH-I focal person on any problems arising from the training to provide solutions.

v. Use language that is preferable to the artisans, where possible a translator will be identified.

vi. The consultant will be available on the days that are agreed in this contract and will not pick any contract during the days mentioned in this terms of reference.

vii. Depending on weather or any other conditions the training days may be shifted in agreement with AAH-I.

viii. The boarding and lodging will be the sole responsibility of the consultant, even if he decides to come with his assistants.

ix. The consultant shall not share or disseminate information to any other person or organisation as regards this contract prior to authorisation by AAH-I.

x. The consultant must share a report within 5 days of completion of the assignment per phase with all relevant annexes in soft copies. The report shall be reviewed by AAH-I and may be returned back for clarification to the consultant work with all relevant annexes.

xi. The payment due to the consultant shall be paid within 7 days on accepting the training report.

2.7 Deliverables and responsibilities of AAH-I

i. Provide for the location and space of training;

ii. Provide necessary materials and tools for training;

iii. Ensure appropriate number of participants in the training; iv. Work out a plan of monitoring activities;

v. Provide for financial arrangements stated in this TORs;

vi. The project staff will collect monthly progress from the artisans on sales and production.

3 PAYMENT AAH-I shall pay competitively for the consultant fee who will in turn pay his assistant, pay for air tickets, meals and accommodation and taxi transfer. The consultant should quote on training consultancy fee.

4 COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

i. The consultants should have experience with similar assignments in the region of focus, handicraft works, fashion and design, Environmental Impact Assessments etc. for at least 3 years.

ii. Have linkage to international market for handicrafts iii. Evidence of work done previously by producing at least two reports
