Equal Education is a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members working for quality and equality in South African education, through analysis and activism. Equal Education is organised in five provinces: Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Western Cape. Equal Education works by identifying systemic and localised problems affecting the quality of education, and addresses these problems through local and national campaign; a commitment to robust political education and campaign strategising with members; and building a strong research base through primary and secondary research.

Head of Gauteng
The Equal Education (EE) Gauteng branch has won major victories in its campaign to ensure the provision of adequate sanitation facilities. Gauteng is a critical site of struggle with proximity to the Department of Basic Education. Members are organised primarily in the East Rand, with a growing presence in Soweto.

The Head of Gauteng is tasked with leading a team of staff and volunteers on campaign strategy, youth leadership development, political education, media engagement, as well as the management of finances and human resources matters.

The successful candidate is an activist and organiser who demonstrates the ability to lead EE in Gauteng, exploring synergies with partner organisations across the province.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Developing campaign strategies with EE Gauteng members, from the identification of problems, to data collection, and mobilisation
  • Managing and developing the staff and volunteers of the Gauteng office
  • Coordinating and running Youth Group meetings for EE members,  and mass meetings of EE members
  • Organising and running trainings and political education seminars and camps for EE members
  • Contributing to and supporting research work
  • Representing EE publicly through engaging stakeholders, academics, government and media
  • Budget planning and monitoring
  • Implementing the EE Policies and Procedures

Requirements for the role:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Sciences, Law, Community Organising or related field
  • Knowledge of South African education policy
  • Understanding of politics, law, government policy and civil society
  • Experience in planning, coordinating and evaluating activities, projects and informal educational programmes
  • A strong background in youth organising in the civil society sector, and demonstrated success in campaign advocacy work will be advantageous
  • Must be independent, driven, a self-starter, and enjoy working with young people
  • Ability to lead and mentor
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends and public holidays when necessary
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Fully computer literate
  • Adept at using social media

The position is based in EE’s Gauteng office in the Johannesburg CBD. However, extensive time is spent with EE members in the East Rand and in Soweto.

Head of National Organising

The Head of National Organising reports to EE’s General Secretary, and is responsible for leading EE’s work in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. National Organising has made enormous strides in its campaigns to ensure the provision of scholar transport to schools in KwaZulu-Natal (and South Africa), and continues to fight for the provision of water and decent toilets to Limpopo schools.

The Head of National Organising leads a team of staff and volunteers on campaign strategy, youth leadership development, political education, media engagement, as well as management of finances and human resources matters.

The successful candidate is an activist and organiser who demonstrates the ability to support the growth of EE in both KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Developing campaign strategies with members in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo
  • Supporting and contributing to campaigns-related research
  • Monitoring and evaluating campaign impact in both provinces
  • Recruiting, training and supervising EE organisers and volunteers in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo
  • Providing the support needed by organisers and volunteers to fulfil their roles (this includes the creating of content for youth group, as well as conducting research for school-based and provincial campaigns)
  • Establishing relationships with crucial stakeholders (schools, partner organisations, etc)
  • Maintaining a membership database
  • Representing EE publicly through engaging stakeholders including academics, government and media

Deputy Head Western Cape
Since being founded in Khayelitsha in 2008, Equal Education (EE) has grown extensively across the Cape Flats and into the southern suburbs. This branch of EE is currently focused on fighting for schools and school communities to be provided with the necessary resources and support to ensure the safety of learners and teachers.

The Deputy Head of the Western Cape supports the Head of the Western Cape in leading a team of staff and volunteers on campaign strategy, youth leadership development, political education, media engagement, as well as management of finances and human resources matters.

The successful candidate is an activist and organiser who demonstrates the ability to strengthen EE in the Western Cape.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Assisting the Head of the Western Cape in meeting the objectives of the province and the broader movement
  • Providing support and guidance to existing branches in the provinces
  • Providing the support necessary to organisers and volunteers to fulfil their roles (this includes the creating of content for youth group, as well as research for school-based and provincial campaigns)
  • Coordinating and running Youth Group meetings for EE members,  and mass meetings of EE members
  • Organising and running trainings and political education seminars and camps for EE members
  • Coordinate impactful parent organising activities
  • Build relationships with university societies and establish EE university branches
  • Establishing relationships with crucial stakeholders (schools, partner organisations, etc)
  • Representing EE publicly through engaging stakeholders including academics, government and media
  • Budget planning and monitoring
  • Implementing the EE Policies and Procedures

Requirements for the role:

The Communications Officer is involved in all aspects of the development, implementation and evaluation of EE’s internal and external communication strategies and activities.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Simple, unified, and compelling internal and external communications
  • Contribute to media strategies for the movement as a whole, for individual campaigns, and for individual activities
  • Assist with drafting and editing of media statements, and coordinating responses to media enquiries
  • Content creation for EE’s electronic platforms, and assisting with oversight
  • Compiling of internal and external publications
  • Strengthening relationships between EE and the media
  • Working with EE members to amplify their voices, and develop their media skills
  • Monitoring of external communications activities and evaluating of impact
  • Archiving

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in relevant field
  • Strong news sense
  • Ability to write quickly and accurately
  • Ability to worth within tight deadlines and to manage competing demands
  • Strong social media skills
  • Willingness to travel regularly between provinces and work extended hours.

  • Ability to shoot and edit photos and video
  • Knack for graphic design

This position is based at EE’s Head Office in Khayelitsha.
