Green Innovation Centre (GIC) 

The Green Innovation Centres (GIC) supports the Ethiopian government with the development of the agricultural sector to improve the food supply chain, foster income generation opportunities and target employment creation. The focal area of the project is to support and improve the honey, faba bean and honey value chains through the promotion of modern agricultural technologies, tailored trainings in Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), high quality seeds and agricultural inputs as well as agro-processing and marketing. The GIC implements its activities in the so-called Ethiopian Honey Belt in Oromia Regioin (Arsi and West Arsi zone) and Amahara Region (East Gojam, West Gojam and South Wollo).

Duration of contract:   Until March 31, 2023

Responsibilities and Duties

A.    Professional advisory services

The value chain manager:

  • prepares and implements the overall strategy for the value chain honey in the regions.
  • Informs and discusses the strategy and the implementation of the activities of the value chain honey with the political partner.
  • monitors the development and implementation of project plans and activities in close consultation with the counterparts
  • advises partner institutions, supports them to prepare concepts and strategies and provides technical inputs.
  • participates in identifying needs for external support and advice and works on policy recommendations.
  • deals with the design, preparation and implementation of workshops, seminars and other events on issues related to the project’s area of activity.
  • develops and organises quality assurance measures and suggests necessary changes, improvements and initiatives.
  • monitors the value chain progress and the activities of in the regions, reviews reports and documents on the progress of joint programmes, identifies bottlenecks and recommends alternative management options to the programme manager.
  • procures the agricultural inputs and tools for the demonstration fields.

B.    Networking and cooperation

The value chain manager:

  • ensures cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with partners; carries out PR work and cooperates with local communities, relevant organisations, non-governmental agencies and individuals in the project/programme environment and with other projects to improve and maintain good working relationships
  • communicates interests and efforts, forwards these and encourages sharing ideas and information for the benefit of the project/programme.
  • travels (abroad) in the region regularly, in accordance with project requirements.

C.    Knowledge management

The value chain manager:

  • compiles information on agriculture and ensures knowledge transfer.
  • develops ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures.
  • draws up reports and presentation documents.
  • formulates appropriate input for various project/programme reports including annual reports, and contributes to the other reports required by the programme manager and GIZ Head Office.
  • assists with research activities and studies on political issues which benefit joint programmes.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Masters/MSc or doctorate in an area of agriculture.

Professional experience

  • 7 years’ professional experience, with at least 3 years’ professional experience in a comparable position.
  • a proven track record in agricultural research is an advantage.

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • very good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office).
  • fluent written and oral knowledge of English and Amharic.
  • willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed.
