We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: WATSAN Technician

Location: Abakaliki, Ebonyi
Employment Type: Full-time
Contract Period: Indefinite

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supporting the EH Manager in the implementation, monitoring, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of Water Hygiene Sanitation activities and infrastructure in the project according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population.
  • Carrying out tasks directly related to the Watsan activities such as construction and maintenance of infrastructures in the project according to MSF protocols and standards concerning the operation of water supply, waste management and excreta disposal, hygiene and infection control.
  • Being responsible for equipment, tools, and consumables, verifying that they are safely used and maintained. Reporting to the supervisor any need of renewal and the weekly/monthly consumption.

MSF Section / Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Supervision of day to day activities of Hygienists, Orderliness and watsan agents in the virology unit and holding areas and make sure that they are fully trained on Prevention, Flows, Protocols, Tasks and responsibilities, cleaning and disinfection.
  • Supervision and close monitoring of Laundry activities and make sure that all the reusable (scrubs, boots, goggles, gloves, aprons etc.) washed and disinfected as per protocol and are enough for each shift in the virology unit and holding areas.
  • Provide support in organizing and conducting trainings on Prevention, Flows, Protocols, Tasks and responsibilities, Environmental Health, and other IPC measures to MSF, FETHA and State health ministry staff.

Minimum Required Skills and Qualifications
Education:

  • Technical certification or proven background, desirable specialization in water and sanitation

Experience:

  • Preferable: Previous working experience working with MSF or other NGOs
  • Previous experience in technical works

Languages:

  • English Language essential
  • Igbo language desirable

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
