Background
The Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery Associations in East Africa programme is a collaborative effort that began in 2014 between the Aga Khan University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM), the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Johnson & Johnson Foundation (JJF). The five-year project concluded in 2019. The programme sought to strengthen the capacity of nine nursing and midwifery associations in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to improve the quality of health services delivered in East Africa.
The specific objectives of the programme were to:
- Strengthen the internal capacity of nursing and midwifery associations to develop business plans/strategic plans, marketing/communication plans, strategies to recruit, engage and retain members, and plans to ensure sustainability.
- Enhance the quality of services offered by associations to their members
- Increase inter-regional collaboration between nursing and midwifery associations and promote sharing of best practices between associations.
- Improve the image and reputation of the nursing and midwifery professions in the region.
Website development is an integral part of an organizational communication and marketing processes that ensure organization’s effective engagement with different potential and existing audiences. It also provides the means by which brands and organizations are presented to their audiences. Two association among the nine require skills development in develop and managing effective websites for their communication and marketing strategies and enhance the organization’s visibility.
GOAL/Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to impart skills to the two association teams to be able to strategically and consistently develop and manage a website that will ensure continued communication with its members and market the organization and its mission.
OBJECTIVES:
This consultancy’s main objectives are:
a. To develop the association capacities in website development to strategically and consistently manage their website to communicate and market the organization.
b. To support in the development of an online engagement plan that enhance visibility and members engagement.
EXPECTED RESULTS (OUTPUTS)
The expected outputs from this consultancy are as follows:
- Training to two associations in website development and management
- Report on the training and development of the website
PROCESS/TASKS/SCOPE OF SERVICES
The consultant will need to undertake the following tasks in order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives:
- Develop a methodology of undertaking the assignment for review and approval.
- Conduct a training for two association staff on website development and management that will enhance association communication and marketing processes.
- Prepare a report of the training and website development
The above tasks are illustrative, and the consultant will be expected to build on these as needed in order to ensure the assignment is completed to the expected standards. He/she is encouraged to consult regularly with AKF staff for any clarification or assistance to further inform the products from this assignment.
KEY Deliverables:
The Consultant will submit the following deliverables at the end of the assignment:
- Website development and management training report (including agenda, resource materials, training evaluation results and signed participants list)
- Two association website
SUPERVISION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE
The Consultant will be supervised by AKF, Kenya Country Office’s Regional technical Advisor CSI, Onyango Cynthia Adhiambo.
PERIOD OF CONSULTANCY
This consultancy is expected to take a total of five days, for the training and development of the websites for communication and marketing strategy and one days for report writing.

All deliberations relating to this consultancy, including all information collected from various meetings/documents shall be kept confidential and shall not be divulged to any third party either verbally or in writing or in any other form.
APPLICANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Consultant should have the following educational qualifications, skills and experience:
- Masters or doctorate in Communication, Marketing, International development, business administration or another relevant field.
- Minimum 5 years work experience in developing communication and marketing strategies for non-profit organizations.
- Sound understanding and application of development management or strategic planning concepts, methodologies and tools.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and report writing skills required.
LOGISTICS AND PROCEDURES
The Consultant will be responsible for covering his/her transport costs for any travel required to meet with AKF staff within Uganda. If the consultant requires office space from where to work, the same can be arranged with AKF to allocate space at the AKF office. AKF will support with printing and communication (email, telephone, and fax) costs where these arise during the assignment.
