The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. Established in 2012, at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, GGGI is accelerating the transition toward a new model of economic growth – green growth – founded on principles of social inclusivity and environmental sustainability.
In contrast to conventional development models that rely on the unsustainable depletion and destruction of natural resources, green growth is a coordinated advancement of economic growth, environmental sustainability, poverty reduction and social inclusion driven by the sustainable development and use of global resources.GGGI is an interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder organization that believes economic growth and environmental sustainability are not merely compatible objectives; their integration is essential for the future of humankind.VisionGGGI envisions a resilient world achieved through strong, inclusive and sustainable green growth.MissionGGGI is dedicated to supporting the transition of GGGI Member countries toward a green growth model by developing and implementing strategies that simultaneously achieve poverty reduction, social inclusion, environmental sustainability and economic growth.ApproachIn pursuit of these goals, GGGI works with developing and emerging countries to design and deliver programs and services that demonstrate new pathways to pro-poor economic growth. GGGI provides Member Countries with the tools to help build institutional capacity and develop green growth policy, strengthen peer learning and knowledge sharing, and engage private investors and public donors.GGGI supports stakeholders through two complementary and integrated workstreams – Green Growth Planning & Implementation and Knowledge Solutions – that deliver comprehensive products and services designed to assist in developing, financing and mainstreaming green growth in national economic development plans.GGGI develops and delivers its global products and services in partnership with government bodies, international organizations, academic institutions and the private sector. GGGI’s comprehensive network and governance structure facilitates a multi-directional and multi-sectoral sharing of knowledge between South-South and South-North-South countries, while gathering global actors with the potential to and set drive the international agenda on green growth.Governance StructureGGGI’s objectives and activities in support of developing countries and emerging economies are detailed in the Establishment Agreement ratified by Member countries in 2012. Membership to GGGI is open to any member state of the United Nations that subscribes to the organizations goals and objectives. Regional integration organizations are also eligible for GGGI membership. GGGI’s governance structure, as outlined in the Agreement, includes an Assembly, a Council, and the Institute. The Assembly, composed of all GGGI members, meets every year and advises on the overall direction of GGGI and reviews the organization’s progress in meeting its stated objectives. The Assembly also elects Council members, appoints a Director-General, and reviews the organization’s progress in meeting its stated objectives. The Council serves as the executive organ of GGGI and thus approves the organization’s strategy, budget, admission of new members, and criteria for green growth planning and implementation programs. The Institute is headed by the Director-General, who represents GGGI externally and provides strategic leadership for the organization to carry out its objectives.
