The Southern African HIV Clinicians Society is a nonprofit membership organisation of over 3 000 health care workers with an interest in HIV. The Society’s mission is to promote evidence-based, quality HIV healthcare in Southern Africa.

The Society seeks to appoint a Community Trainer, based in Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Start date: Immediate

Salary range: R5 000.00 plus costs

The Stop Stockouts Project (SSP) is a collaboration of several organisations dedicated to improving health in South Africa with a goal is to ensure reliable availability and access to medicines and medical supplies in South Africa.

The Community Trainer will be responsible for organising and conducting community workshops. The Community Trainer will be responsible for mobilising and encouraging attendance at the workshops and building a rapport with the community and important stakeholders. The Community Trainer will work with other community projects and radio stations in the area to promote the project as required. The Community Trainer is responsible for working with clinics in the community to review medication stocks and report any shortages or stock outs to the relevant stakeholders. The Community Trainer must also develop strong relationships with communities, healthcare workers and clinicians so that they report stockouts to the project timeously. The Community Trainer must establish a district working committee or link the SSP objectives to the Community Office Bearers, which will then link to the Community council-or BECs

Responsibilities:

  • Organise and conduct SSP workshops on constitutional and patient rights and on the impact of medicine Stockouts and shortages on patients and communities, including organising and mobilising people to attend, as well as coordinating the logistical arrangements for the activity (venue hire, distribution material, transportation) (Target: two per month)
  • Mobilise and network with other community based organisations to participate in the SSP model with emphasis on encouraging reporting of stock outs to the project (Target: two or more different groups per month)
  • Organise community/patient mobilising events to promote the project (venue hire, event activities, event materials etc.) (Target: two per month)
  • Promote the model with other organisations and stakeholders to encourage reporting of stock outs to the project (Target: two or more per month)
  • Along with the TAC Branch Organisers based in the province of work, collaborate on material distribution and promotional activities, including
  • Carrying out door-to-door campaigns to promote the project (Target: three per month)
  • Identify and set targets and goals for distribution of SSP material in their respective province through monthly reporting
  • Conduct facility site visits to introduce the project to the facility management, conduct training sessions in the clinic waiting area, provide SSP material to the clinic, and gather contact details and sign up individuals to the SMS broadcast list (Target: 10 or more per month)
  • Establish working relationships with community radio stations and newspapers in order to access local media platforms for interviews and free advertising (Target: two per year)
  • Organise events with TAC and other community organisations to promote the project (venue hire, event activities, event materials etc.)
  • Compile an on time comprehensive monthly report on activities carried out and targets reached
  • Collaborate the SSP work with that of TAC in the branches, through a branch team/leader
  • Be part of TAC branch meetings and activities based on branch specific activities
  • Establish a district working committee or link the SSP objectives to the Community Office Bearers, which will then link to the Community council-or BECs
  • Attend and participate in Society meetings, organisational reviews and planning as well as other meetings that relate to the work of the Society.
  • Any ad hoc job functions that may be required by the Society within reason and skill level

Requirements:

  • Matric
  • Facilitation Course an advantage
  • At least two years’ experience in a community advocacy role
  • Well skilled at a training and conducting workshops and community dialogues
  • Experience and/or knowledgeable of the HIV/AIDS sector
  • Familiarity with community health worker programmes
  • Basic Computer proficiency
  • Working knowledge of English – both written and spoken
  • Fluent in at least one of the following languages: Sesotho, IsiZulu, or IsiXhosa
  • Have analytical skills
  • Have computer skills necessary for data capturing, report writing and using web programmes
  • Have experience and interest in activism and advocacy
  • Ability to interact with people reporting stock outs in a compassionate and dignified manner whilst acquiring reliable information from them
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter
  • Networking skills and the ability to build long-term working relationships with a number of stakeholders
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • At least one additional South African language

The Southern African HIV Clinicians Society (the Society) is a membership organisation of over 3 000 health care workers with an interest in HIV. The Society’s mission is to promote evidence-based, quality HIV healthcare in Southern Africa.

The Society is a non-profit company (NPC) and is governed by a thirteen-member Board of Directors, all of whom serve a two-year term. The current Board is led by elected President, Dr Francesca Conradie and elected Deputy President, Prof. Yunus Moosa.

The Society has one committee, the Child and Adolescent Committee, which is governed by a six member leadership group. The purpose of the committee is to advance best practice HIV prevention, care and treatment services for children and adolescents.

The Society’s membership includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals working in the field of HIV. Members of the Society are amongst the most respected and influential HIV clinicians and policy makers within Southern Africa and hold prestigious positions within academic, public and private organisations in the field of HIV in the region.

The Society’s secretariat is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is led by Chief Executive Officer, Lauren Jankelowitz.
