B Lab Kenya Country Director  

Position Summary

B Lab East Africa is seeking a Kenya Country Director, entrepreneurial and forward thinking, to lead the Kenya office into a new cycle of growth and development. You will be
responsible for fundraising, legal work, strategic planning, goal setting, and team building.
The preferred candidate will build awareness of the B Corp movement, grow our community of Measure What Matters Partners and develop strategic partnerships with a range of stakeholders in Kenya.

Country Director Responsibilities in overseeing the following areas

  1. Fundraising activities:
    Developing a clear fundraising strategy, with a target of $ 300,000 of new grant revenue by 31 March 2019
    ● Ability to tell story of the impact B Lab East Africa is having in the region to potential funders / donors. Developing relationships with major donors, identifying new
    potential major donors and nurturing relationships
    ● Researching and approaching trusts, government agencies and other bodies that could potentially make grants to the organization
    ● Writing and presenting proposals
    ● Managing the grant application process and ensuring that reporting is tracked and meets donors’ expectations
    ● Attending relevant fundraising forums
  2. Build a community of leaders (Certified B Corporations):
    Grow the community of B Corps in Kenya by an additional 20 companies in the next 18 months
    ● Pipeline development of prospective B Corps in market
    ● Projections of certified B Corps and meeting projected certified B Corps
    ● Account management of key B Corp accounts in Kenya
    ● Report on attrition rates for certified B corps in the region
    ● Report on engagement strategies (Champions retreat, etc.)
    ● Meeting projected targets for other initiatives (GIIRS, Best For, B Analytics, MWM Partnerships, etc.)
  3. Policy work:
    Overseeing the Kenyan legal working group and taking the lead in liaising with identified lawyers in determining the legal pathway for the B Corp certification / the Benefit Corporation legal structure in the region
  4. Identifying and developing strategic partnerships:
    With government, foundations, influencers, mainstream businesses, media, investors, academics, and manage these relationships to increase awareness of, and
    commitment to, the B Corp movement
    ● Develop network relations and identifying new development opportunities to strengthen B Lab East Africa image and reputation
  5. Strategic Planning:
    Responsible for contributing to and implementing a multi-year strategic plan to engage, serve and grow the B Corp community in Kenya
    ● Forecasting healthy/ reasonable projections of revenue from certification fees and philanthropic support
    ● Forecasting expected growth in B Corp certification and other initiatives (GIIRS, Best For, B Analytics, MWM Partnerships, etc.) for the next 1-3 years
    ● Ability to create new products and fee based services for the region (earned income strategy)
  6. Internal focus:
    Culture and team – work together with the Operations Manager in arranging for quarterly business planning, team rituals and retreats, resourcing, team professional
    development
    ● Board Liaison – Manage with the Executive Director B Lab East Africa’s P&L, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet
    ● Staffing strategies that match revenue and program expansion projections

Key strengths of the Country Director:
With the mindset that good business is about much more than making money, the preferred candidate will be a high energy, motivated individual with a passion for making a positive impact.

Ideally, they will possess:

  • Deep “roots” in the Kenyan business community and particularly in the sustainability space
  • You have a track record building diverse business relationships
    ● Experience in driving market entry strategies or have successfully launched new products
    ● You are a dynamic individual who thrives in a variety of contexts
    ● Demonstrated commitment to B Lab’s mission to redefine success in business
    ● Preferred fundraising experience
    ● Past experience in grant management
    ● Preferred legal experience
    ● Strong presentation and storytelling skills
    ● Experience in working collaboratively with various stakeholders: government, businesses, foundations, associations, NGOs and possess contacts within these
    sectors
    ● A team player with a demonstrated collaborative style
    ● At least 3 years’ solid experience managing diverse teams
