Job Description

One Acre Fund is seeking an experienced professional to set global marketing and communications strategy and to lead its growing communications department.

With a focus on catalyzing a widespread belief that investing in smallholder farmers is the solution to global poverty, the Marketing & Communications Director will be responsible for devising and implementing strategic communications plans, leading and mentoring communications staff, and managing organizational reputation. The position reports to the senior vice president for policy and partnerships and regularly interacts with global and in-country leadership.

Unlike many other organizations, One Acre Fund does not seek publicity to further its own reputation. Instead, we aim to use communications to amplify the voices of the smallholder farmers we serve, and to persuade policy, financing, funding audiences to put farmers first.

To be successful in this position, the Marketing & Communications Director will keep the department focused on the critical path and ensure a high return on investment of staff time. Lastly, to be successful in managing the existing communications team, the Director will foster an environment of continuous learning, knowing when to lead from the front—and when to lead from behind to create space for individual staff members to grow and flourish.

The ideal candidate has deep experience and credentials in marketing, communications, public relations, and leadership. While experience in international development or agriculture is not required, it is preferred.

Responsibilities include:

  • Setting vision and strategy for global marketing and communications
  • Leading and developing the communications department (team of 13)
  • Setting marketing strategy to maximize the impact of content distribution
  • Leading global media relations and maintaining organizational reputation, including being “on call” after hours and on weekends.
  • Preparing leadership and staff for high-profile interviews
  • Guiding organizational editorial strategy and messaging
  • Guiding digital and visual media communications strategies
  • Positioning staff at key events and preparing them for speaking engagements
  • Mentoring individual team members and guiding their professional development

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
