Job Description

  • FHI 360 is seeking a short term Human Resources (HR) consultant for Northeast Nigeria.
  • FHI 360 has been working in Nigeria for over 30 years and is expanding activities in Borno state to respond to the IDP crisis.
  • As part of the expansion into humanitarian work, HR policies and procedures need to be reviewed and new ones developed to address the growing needs of local and international staff in the area.
  • The expected duration of the assignment is 2-3 weeks and based entirely in Nigeria with time spent in Abuja for an introduction and debrief.
  • Majority of time will be spent in Maiduguri.

Job Summary / Responsibilities
Scope of Work:

  • Given the working and living conditions that front-line local and expat staff encounter, the project seeks to ensure that FHI’s benefit package is in line with other actors in the humanitarian field.
  • The Humanitarian HR consultant will have experience working for a humanitarian organization and familiar with successful benefits packages used for recruitment and retention of local staff and international staff.
  • S/he will examine the FHI 360 work space in the NE, specifically in Maiduguri.
  • A significant duration of the consultant’s two weeks will be spent in Maiduguri to become familiar with the work environment, which should better-inform the kind of benefit packages and HR polices needed for retention and recruitment of local staff.
  • At the end of the assessment, the consultant will:
    • Meet with Project and Country Office leadership on recommendations to policies and benefits;
    • Propose recommendations that will ensure policies and benefit packages are competitive and comparable in the humanitarian field;
    • Create a final report which details the gaps, recommendations, and evidence of best practices regarding Humanitarian HR benefits and policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in a related field
  • Typically requires 5-8 years of HR experience.
  • Experience work for a humanitarian/crisis response organization required
  • Experience supporting humanitarian response in North East Nigeria, preferred
  • Has sensitivity to cultural diversity and understanding of the political, contextual, and ethical issues in assigned areas.
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and problem solving skills to plan, organize, and manage resources for successful completion of projects.
  • Articulate and professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO), government agency, or private company.
