Doctors without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in 1971. Today, MSF provides independent, impartial assistance in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters.

MSF Switzerland in Nigeria currently has 3 projects mainly on primary and secondary health care, vaccination, nutrition programs and water and sanitation activities in Gambaru/Ngala, Rann and Banki.

Starting date: as soon as possible
Type of contract: 3 months renewable
Place of work: Maiduguri, MSF Switzerland offices with frequent travels to Abuja

Scope of responsibility:
Defining, coordinating and monitoring all pharmacy related activities in the Mission, according to MSF standards and values and with consideration of national and international laws and regulations
Function responsibilities include:
– Supporting in representing and defending MSF’s interests before the Ministry of Health and other local authorities or local suppliers, in order to ensure stock procurement following national laws and MSF protocols.
– Budgeting and preparing drug and medical material orders together with Medical and Logistic Coordinators.
– Supervising and implementing pharmacy management across the projects, ensuring the proper implementation of MSF Safety standards and waste management protocols, according to (inter)national legislation.
– Supporting all drug and medical material supply processes, incl. regular visits to project sites; collecting and analyzing stock indicators according to physical records and providing technical pharmacy support regarding pharmaceutical information, medication use, management of side effects, adherence issues etc.
– Monitoring the procurement process and takes corrective measures when needed, ensuring regular communication with other departments. Ensure local medical purchases are made from approved sources.
– Facilitating correct stock management and transport/storage procedures in medical warehouse, follow-up of loans/donations and management of expired medications, ensuring maintenance of medical emergency kits.
– Inventory Management. Supervising storage conditions, classification, organization and inventory
– Planning and supervising of the staff under his/her responsibility
– Participating in reporting according to MSF guidelines (SitReps, medical statistical reports, etc.) and reporting on drug consumptions and medical devices dispensed according to protocols, informing on unusual patterns

Experience required:
– Essential Pharmacy degree / Pharmacy management diploma. Desired Master level in Pharmacy
– Essential 2 years experience in (hospital) pharmacy management, experience with NGO’s an asset

Required qualification:
– Essential computer literacy (word, excel, internet), desirable knowledge of “Isy stock”
– English language mandatory , French an asset
– People Management, Commitment to MSF Principles, Flexibility, Results and Quality Orientation, Teamwork

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
