AIR’s Policy, Practice and Systems Change Unit seeks to enhance the capacity of people in developing countries to improve their quality of life through education and social development. We have worked in collaboration with local and international stakeholders in more than 80 countries over the past three decades. We seek to ensure children’s equitable access to all levels of education; improve the quality and relevance of education; and empower individuals, communities, and institutions as agents of social and behavioral change.
AIR is seeking a STEM Teacher Education Component Lead to work on an expected 5 year, USAID-funded STEM Project in Egypt. The purpose of the Activity is to continue development of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) school system across Egypt through: (1) Introducing STEM teacher education and preparation programs in the Faculties of Education (FOEs) and in partnership with Faculties of Science and Engineering, (2) Developing year-long post-graduate certification courses for STEM teachers and administrators and, (3) Continuing to support and strengthen current MOE’s efforts to achieve and sustain consistent quality in STEM schools so that STEM schools can be scaled across governorates.
This position is contingent on funding.
Responsibilities:
The STEM Teacher Education Component Lead, in collaboration with the COP and/or the DCOP, will coordinate all activities with technical approach related to introducing teacher education at the university level and improving in-service teachers’ preparation.
• Responsible for sharing new knowledge/evidence and best practices related to STEM education and educational reform at the university and pre-university levels.
• Support/guide the team of technical experts to design the necessary professional development packages, course design, curriculum development, and systemic and institutional reform.
• Provide technical advice based upon expertise and knowledge of evidence-based methods and strategies, current practice, and established research standards to ensure quality and rigorous design.
• Design and implement specific program activities
• Monitor project management staff performance, including performance reviews.
• Provide training and development opportunities and serve in mentoring role for direct reports.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Education or a relevant field from an internationally recognized university
• Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the successful development and implementation of educational reform at university and pre-university levels, and STEM education
• Strong knowledge in literacy and learning; specific experience in one or more of the areas of curriculum development, teacher education and/or educational policy reform is desired
• Proven experience in mentorship and staff capacity building
• Experience working on donor funded programs
• Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail, ability to prioritize and multi-task, and ability to work under and adhere to tight deadlines
• Excellent cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills; ability to translate complex technical language and ideas into a form easily comprehensible to non-technical audiences
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team; must be a team player and demonstrate a sense of responsibility and sensitivity in dealing with diverse audiences
• Familiarity with the political, social, economic and cultural context of working in Egypt is also necessary
• Ability to communicate professionally and provide written reporting in English required
