Horizon Institute is looking to hire an experienced senior researcher to work on Horizon’s diverse range of substantive projects on justice, human rights and governance.
Period: 3 to 6 months (with the possibility of extension);
Start Date: 25 November 2019 and if possible earlier;
Location: Nairobi, Kenya (with travel to Somaliland). We will also consider outstanding applicants who can work remotely on a part-time basis;
Salary and Benefits: Horizon offers competitive rates with regard to remuneration and benefits. A return flight to Nairobi will be provided and all travel related to work will be covered.
Role and Responsibilities
The Senior Researcher will be expected to:
- Research, monitor and document areas of research by collecting and analysing information from a wide variety of sources, including international and local media; local, regional and international NGOs; the public and open source information, depending on the research assignment;
- Write accurate, unbiased, comprehensive and timely reports and other documents that include policy recommendations relevant to the intended audience of the research area;
- Write reports and other documents including, but not limited to, op-eds, press releases, briefing memos and other material to disseminate research findings and policy recommendations;
- Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to promote reports and documents produced from research;
- Travel within Somaliland and in the region as required to conduct research;
- Oversee the work of any Research Assistant assigned to the same research projects;
- Deliver outputs in a timely manner.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who are excellent writers, with considerable experience as field researchers, who require minimal supervision and who can lead a team of researchers independently. Applicants should show proven interest in human rights and issues related to justice and a track record as researchers who have written widely. They should also have:
Essential
- A degree in law, international relations, or similar;
- A postgraduate qualification;
- At least 7-8 years of work experience;
- Fluency in English;
- Substantial previous research and writing experience;
- A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the areas in which Horizon works.
- Confidence with Microsoft Office (including Excel);
Desired
- Experience working in developing countries and with human rights groups;
- Experience with data analysis or survey design.
