The Conflict Analyst will keep track of the unfolding social, political, violent extremism, and conflict dynamics in Mozambique and Tanzania and provide analytical real time conflict analysis. S/he will provide periodic, gender, conflict sensitive and thematic conflict analysis reports to inform the programme, partners, donors and other stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for the implementation of Search for Common Ground’s conflict-sensitivity engagements in Mozambique and Tanzania.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare briefings or updates based on the review and analysis of news, incident reports from the staff and partners, interviews with key informants, and information collected from Search Mozambique and Tanzania programmes and early warning system
- Prepare specific conflict analysis reports on a periodic basis, either thematic or geographic-focus based on the need and relevance
- Produces weekly and monthly conflict and context analytical updates.
- Serve as a hub for reporting of incidents from staff and partners as required
- Liaise with government, civil society, security actors, donors, media, UN bodies, and the private sector as needed to further improve information in the reports
- Carry out specific research and studies as required
- Contribute to the proposal and report writing processes by writing the context analysis section
- Contribute to developing curriculum and implementing the training on “conflict sensitivity and do no harm” to staff, partners and local stakeholders
- Seek out opportunities to build partnerships with critical government, civil society, security, donor, media and private sector actors on peace and security issues in Mozambique and Tanzania
- Represent Search at national and international level engagements necessary for policy and program influence
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in conflict and peacebuilding studies, international relations, political sciences or related fields.
- Additional extensive training in at least one of the areas of SFCG thematic work – Peacebuilding, conflict transformation and resolution
- Fluency in Portuguese; working knowledge of English and Swahili is an added advantage
- Mozambican national or legal resident with permission to work.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience carrying out conflict analysis, research, training on conflict sensitivity and do no harm
- Demonstrated skills of using different conflict analysis frameworks; conflict analysis, peacebuilding or development engagement in conflict environments
- Deep understanding of the social, political and conflict dynamics in Mozambique and Tanzania
- Knowledge using qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis tools
- Knowledge of early warning systems
- Ability to prioritise, plan and organise workflow to tight timeframes, handle multiple tasks, and be flexible with changing priorities
- Excellent skills for policy advocacy and policy influencing on thematic conflict issues in Mozambique and Tanzania at multiple levels
- Demonstrated ability to undertake high-level representation and advocacy
- Willingness to regularly travel on short notice around the country
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage a diverse team in a complex environment
- Computer literate and experience using MS Office packages
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills, including the ability to build relationships internally and externally
- Cross-cultural sensitivity & experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to write reports in English
- Fluency in English and Portuguese language required

- Thorough understanding of the global security trends, national efforts on peace and conflict management, network with existing peace institutions and understanding of the national legal and peace policy framework
