A group of funders, together with the DG Murray Trust, is launching a national Zero-Stunting Initiative committed to halving stunting in the next decade. The prevalence of stunting, a condition where children do not reach their growth potential due to chronic malnutrition, is worryingly high in South Africa, with the recent national Demographic and Health Survey estimating the national prevalence of stunting for children under two being 31%. Stunting is associated with lifelong cognitive defects, educational and employment challenges, increased risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, and cycles of intergenerational poverty.
The Zero-Stunting Initiative seeks to achieve four objectives:
- Support and promote behaviour change of mothers through universal access to antenatal and postnatal classes
- Catalysing Community Healthcare Workers into ‘Champions for Children’
- Change the culture of early child feeding practices (both non-exclusive breastfeeding and poor weaning practices) through disruptive mass media communications
- Drive national commitment to Zero-stunting by 2030 through data-driven advocacy
To this end, the Zero-Stunting Initiative is recruiting a high-value, high-performance team to lead this work and achieve the ambitious goal of halving the prevalence of stunting in South Africa within a decade.
The Communications Specialist:
The Communications Specialist will lead the over-arching communications strategy for the Zero-Stunting Initiative as well as be primarily responsible for the design and development of a disruptive mass media campaign aimed at changing the culture of early child feeding practices i.e. non-exclusive breastfeeding and poor weaning practices in South Africa. This individual will have:
- A university degree (preferably in media or marketing)
- Skills in interpreting data, framing and presenting arguments
- The ability to apply research insights and knowledge of behaviour change and communication theory to a practical implementation plan
- Excellent knowledge of the SA media landscape including radio, outdoor, TV and print
- Excellent writing and presentation skills.
- A background in advocacy work would be preferable
Each position is a 3-year performance-contract post. Salary negotiable, based on skills and experience. All positions (bar CHW Master Trainer & Communications Specialist roles) are based in Johannesburg, with a significant amount of domestic travel. CHW Master Trainer and Communications Specialist roles could be based in either Johannesburg or Cape Town.
