Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) is a faith-based health solutions provider founded by an ecumenical partnership of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and the Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK). The Organization’s core mandate is to provide reliable and affordable Health Products and Technologies, Quality Assurance and Health Systems Strengthening Services. MEDS was established in 1986 and serves clients spread throughout Kenya, other regions in Africa and beyond.

The position will report to the Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible for providing advice to the Board and Management on legal and governance issues to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, mitigate legal risks and promote good governance practices.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Develop, manage and spearhead implementation of the organization’s legal and compliance strategy and operational framework
  2. Advise the Board and Management on legal and governance related matters and align organizational policies, processes and procedures with best practice
  3. Carry out legal audits to identify, assess and manage gaps and potential risks that could affect achievement of the organization’s strategic goals and operations
  4. Train and educate key stakeholders on compliance related matters to enhance knowledge and compliance to statutory and regulatory requirements
  5. Develop and implement legal and compliance related work plans to address unique requirements of the organization’s business units
  6. Negotiate, draft, review and vet contracts, agreements and other legal documents to safeguard the organization’s interests
  7. Advise Management on employment and taxation related matters to ensure compliance with applicable laws
  8. Represent the organization in relevant forums and advocate for its interests on legal issues relating to the organization’s business
  9. Handle commercial and contractual disputes involving the organization for satisfactory resolution
  10. Liaise with external legal service providers on litigations and other legal issues involving the organisation to ensure timely, efficient and effective handling and conclusion
  11. Handle legal drafting and conveyancing where required to address organizational transactional requirements
  12. Identify emerging legal and regulatory issues that are likely to affect the organization, assess impact and recommend action plan to address them
  13. Coordinate implementation of governance related activities in the organization
  14. Prepare periodic reports relating to the docket for decision making

    Job requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
  • Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate
  • Member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing
  • Certified Public Secretary
  • Minimum of seven years post admission experience, three (3) of which should be at Managerial level
  • Master’s Degree in a Business related field and work experience in Health Commodities or FMCG sector are added advantages
  • Functional skills: Negotiation, mediation, communication and report writing
