Reported to: Chief Medical Officer
Duty Station: Maseru
 
Position Overview
The Psychiatrist at Partners In Health will be accountable for the overall mental health support at Partners In Health Lesotho, including the Botsabelo Hospital, Rural Initiative clinics, and mental health accompaniment to the Ministry of Health (MoH). The Psychiatrist serves as a leader in developing mental health programs, providing guidance on the management of sick mental health patients, developing mental health strategies and implementation, and providing mental health technical support to the MoH.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 
Technical assistance:
  • Provide technical support to the PIHL directly supported health facilities including Botsabelo Hospital, the rural clinics
  • Provide capacity building to the PIHL and Ministry of Health staff through training, supportive supervision, mentorship
  • Direct the PIHL mental health toward attaining mental health universal health coverage
  • Provide mental health accompaniment to the director of mental health in developing mental health strategies and mental health strategic plan and implementation
  • Provide consultation to sick and critical patients at the PIHL-supported health facilities
  • Make rounds once a week and assess sick mental health patients at Mohlomi Hospital
  • Attend regularly the mental health technical working group
  • Develop a capacity-building plan for Ministry of Health staff such as doctors and interns through formal or bedside and ground round sessions
  • Support to develop mental health advocacy for the strengthening of mental health services
  • Participate in mental health resources mobilization
 Clinical and Training Support:
 
  • Provide direct supervision to the RI site and Botsabelo and the district MOTU health facilities
  • Provide onsite and regular training on mental health conditions
  • Conduct training needs assessment for all PIH Lesotho supported staff and design intervention strategies to address the gaps identified through onsite training.
Administrative & leadership:
 
  • Assist in the mental health annual work plan and budget plan
  • Support in the development of mental health capacity plan
  • Support in the utilization of mental health data for evidence-based decision making
  • Develop annual work plans and budget plans for the laboratory unit
Qualifications
  • Degree of Medicine and Residency in Psychiatrist from a fully accredited institution with a minimum of 5 years of work experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting Mental health services in lower and middle-income countries
  • Experience in health systems strengthening in rural and/or resource-limited settings
  • Demonstrated ability for supervision and mentorship
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English
  • Ability to generate documents (e.g. reports, grants, training materials) on a deadline
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cultures with respect and humility
  • Personal and professional commitment to social justice
