BACKGROUND ON Ghana IHP:

The purpose of the USAID-funded Ghana Integrated Health Partnership (IHP) activity to strategically contribute to the Government of Ghana’s strategies to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths, including stillbirths, and improve their overall health and well-being by 2030. Activities are expected to advance Ghana toward increased localization, strengthening the capacity of Ghana institutions and local organizations to introduce, deliver, scale-up, and sustain the use of evidence-based, quality RMNCH, voluntary family planning, malaria, and global health security services. The project will increase access, utilization and quality of maternal and child health, family planning, malaria, and nutrition services to reduce preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths in northern Ghana.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Project HOPE seeks a Senior Neonatal Nurse Specialist to support the design, implementation, and monitoring of high-quality newborn interventions (including small and sick newborn), while working closely with relevant units at all levels of the Ghana Health Service, respective national level stakeholders and within targeted regions. The specialist will work with the project and GHS mentors to strengthen the quality of newborn care including both in the delivery room and in the NICU. He / She will provide direct NICU mentorship at the tertiary level delivery rooms and NICUs to ensure quality in these busy and complex settings and represent the project at various national Newborn technical working groups and committee meetings, as suggested by the RMNCH Senior Technical Advisor. She or He will capture key lessons learned and ensure deliverables within these technical areas are implemented according to the set workplan, with necessary adjustments, as required, based on learnings and best practices.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with other program leads, the RMNCH Senior Technical Advisor, and implementing partners to plan, implement, monitor, report, and revise the needed activities for ensuring integrated quality respectful essential Newborn care, small and sick newborn care, referral from community level through primary health care to hospitals, with focus on evidence based routine and emergency newborn care in the delivery room, including immediate skin to skin, initiation of breastfeeding, pre-referral stabilization, care during referral, care at the NICU and Kangaroo Mother Care. Establish/maintain relationship with relevant stakeholders to ensure ownership, participation, and sustainability in all project areas, including strengthening/establishing newborn and child TWG and ensuring that newborn indicators are part of ongoing QI activities.
  • Work together with knowledge management colleagues for regular sharing of newborn programme implementation best practices internally within Project HOPE and with external stakeholders through stories, and abstracts.
  • Build relationships with leading national and regional projects and agencies, including USAID and the private sector, to exchange knowledge and understandings.
  • Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be an experienced Neonate Nurse Specialist with public health and programming experience. eZ2iI9u BVUcJh
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in successful programming and implementation of neonatal programs.
  • Experience implementing WHO newborn care guidelines (Helping Babies Breathe, Essential Care for Every Baby, Essential Care for Small Babies, KMC etc)
  • English Fluency, fluency in local languages important
  • Comfortable with Microsoft program
