Project Background

The purpose of USAID Southern Africa Mobilizing Investment is to catalyze and mobilize greater volumes of private capital into sectors that can increase employment, decrease poverty, and reduce inequality within the South African Region. USAID Southern Africa Mobilizing Investment will use a market systems approach to accelerate investment and inclusive economic growth in Southern n Africa. As a market facilitator, DAI will work with and through the private sector to identify investment opportunities and use de-risking (Component 1) to align incentives and mobilize capital while strengthening the skills, relationships, an information sources and flows necessary to change market behavior and dynamics across the investment ecosystems (Components 2, 3, and 4).

1. Objectives of the assignment

The Content Creator and Graphic Designer will report to the Communications Manager and collaborate with other members of the team in the development and dissemination of USAID Southern Africa Mobilizing Investment communication products. S/he will engage activity stakeholders in collecting information, images, videos, and other communications products emerging from grants activity implementation to develop USAID Southern Africa Mobilizing Investment learning notes, success stories, and project outreach materials that include, amongst others, fact sheets, booklets, presentations, videos, etc. S/he will transform written pieces into visually appealing graphics to be disseminated to project target audiences and USAID.

2. Tasks & Responsibilities

The Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Communications Manager with the implementation of the project’s Strategic Communications Strategy.
  • Draft content for and manage the project’s social media channels for project-focused content.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Manager and Technical teams, create tailored content that focuses on the activities undertaken by partners and grantees that demonstrate the successful implementation of the project.
  • Manage content dissemination to reach target audiences as defined in the project’s communications strategy.
  • Ensure compliance to USAID Branding and Marking requirements and work closely with partners to ensure compliance.
  • Design and layout of various documents, including fact sheets, brochures, advertisements, infographics, etc.
  • Create compelling and cohesive graphics and visual content for digital and print channels that simplify complex information for diverse audiences.
  • Develop design elements for, amongst others, presentations, quarterly and annual reports, fact sheets, and other technical deliverables.
  • Produce visual products that comply with USAID branding guidelines and meet accessibility requirements (E.g., 508 Compliance per U.S. government regulations).
  • Offer advice on partner marking and branding guidelines to ensure adherence on all deliverables.
  • Provide communication support for events, including procurement, photography, managing RSVPs, coordinating with vendors, etc.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Communications Manager.

3. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic design
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Advanced design skills and experience developing materials and infographics using Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Express) – Non-negotiable
  • Experience with document and publication layout and design
  • Familiarity with and skill in improving the design/layout of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word documents, PowerPoint presentations) and Google Docs and Google Slides
  • Good writing skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Previous USAID experience would be advantageous.
  • Experience with website content management systems (E.g., WordPress, SquareSpace, Drupal, etc.)

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role will report to the Communications Manager and work closely together to support coordination and leadership of all USAID Mobilizing Investment investor relationships and technical activities, overseeing development of technical tools and approaches, and ensuring the adoption of USAID Mobilizing Investment innovations and best practices across the mechanism.

Base of Operations and Reporting:

The Content Creator and Graphic Designer will be based in Johannesburg (Rosebank), South Africa and will report to the Communications Manager, USAID Mobilizing Investment project. The indicative start date is January 06, 2025. The ideal candidate is an individual who is flexible, and able to work longer hours when the project demands. Note that this is a consultancy role, the successful candidate will perform the aforementioned duties as/when the need arises.
