Tanzania Agroforestry Associate (Fixed-Term) 30 views0 applications

About One Acre Fund

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund equips more than 4 million smallholder farmers to make their farms more productive. Across nine countries that together are home to two-thirds of Africa’s farmers, we provide high-quality farm supplies, tree seedlings, accessible credit, modern agronomic training, and a wide range of other agricultural services. On average, this model enables any farmer to increase her income and assets on supported land by more than 40 percent, while permanently improving their climate resilience. This is all made possible by our team of 8,000+ full-time staff, drawn from diverse backgrounds and professions*.*

Our Tanzania program, founded in 2013, serves approximately 150,000 farmers, providing quality farm supplies through a network of agrodealer shops, and a range of different tree species through local nurseries situated close to farmers. Our team in Tanzania is headquartered in Iringa and supported by two smaller offices—Mbeya and Njombe in the southern highlands. To learn more about our work, look at our Tanzania program blog.

About the Role

By 2030, the Tanzania program plans to distribute 30 million trees of diverse species to more than 200,000 smallholder farmers. The agroforestry portfolio includes timber, fruit, and soil-improving species, which are projected to create $45 million of farmer financial impact by 2030. The Forestry Associate will lead the success of this plan.

You will report directly to the Agroforestry Manager, and manage a team of about 25 permanent and 300 temporary staff spread across 4-6 regions in the Southern Highlands.

Responsibilities

  • Design program and agroforestry systems:
    • You’ll conduct field and desk research to design and trial agroforestry systems that maximize farmer impact by transforming their farms into productive and resilient ecosystems
    • You’ll rigorously assess farmer demand and potential for multiple agroforestry species.
    • You’ll create annual work-planning activities for the program.
    • You’ll develop tree impact models, collaborating with the MEL team to execute annual agroforestry impact assessments in the field
  • Maximize farmer returns through training: You’ll develop and oversee the execution of training content for all tree species
  • Team management: Initially you will manage three team members’ performance.
  • Tree Production and Logistics: You’ll lead the production/sourcing of tree seedlings through partnerships and by managing the establishment of centralized and decentralized nurseries. Create models to distribute the tree seedlings across the Southern Highlands.

Career Growth and Development

We have a strong culture of constant learning and we invest in developing our people. You’ll have weekly check-ins with your manager, access to mentorship and training programs, and regular feedback on your performance. We hold career reviews every six months, and set aside time to discuss your aspirations and career goals. You’ll have the opportunity to shape a growing organization and build a rewarding long-term career.

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
