Position Summary

The Livelihood Development Field Assistant will play a crucial role in implementing and monitoring sustainable livelihood initiatives within the Volcanoes National Park (VNP) conservation and development projects. This position will focus on enhancing economic opportunities for local communities while promoting conservation-friendly practices. This position will work closely with other field assistants and project partners. The position will be for an initial one year, with possibility of extension based on performance and project needs.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Assist in implementing livelihood development activities by providing logistical and administrative support for high-value agriculture, sustainable livestock farming, and ecotourism initiatives
  2. Support the delivery of training sessions by helping prepare training materials, managing logistics, and documenting participant feedback on agricultural techniques, business skills, and sustainable practices
  3. Assist in maintaining demonstration plots, greenhouses, and other livelihood infrastructure through regular monitoring visits and basic maintenance support
  4. Help collect and organize information on local markets and assist in maintaining records of community products and services
  5. Support monitoring activities by gathering data on livelihood interventions, maintaining databases, and assisting in the preparation of progress reports
  6. Work collaboratively with team members to ensure alignment between livelihood activities and conservation goals, providing administrative support as needed
  7. Assist in documenting benefit-sharing processes from conservation-based enterprises by maintaining records and helping track distributions
  8. Help identify potential local entrepreneurs and community-based organizations by maintaining databases of interested participants and assisting with initial screening processes

Requirements and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Rural Development, Agri -Business, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in community livelihood development or related field.
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices, small business development, and ecotourism
  • Strong facilitation and training skills.
  • Excellent analytical and report writing skills.
  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda; knowledge of French is an advantage.
  • Willingness to spend significant time in the field and travel to remote areas.
