Context:

Under the general guidance of the Deputy Chief of Mission/Head of Programmes, and the direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator, the incumbent will be responsible for coordinating direct implementation of protection activities in the Sudan Mission in coordination with relevant units. The National Protection Officer will provide support in protection activities relating to needs of IDPs in Sudan, Counter-Trafficking, and Gender-Based Violence.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  1. Support the technical supervision and day-to-day management and monitoring of protection activities, including assistance to vulnerable IDPs, counter-trafficking activities through coordination with the Protection Cluster and the Mixed Movement Working Group.
  2. Represent IOM in all Protection Cluster meetings and co-chair the Mixed Movement Working Group (together with UNHCR).
  3. Support relevant units in mainstreaming protection across all projects and activities, including provision of training and capacity building to IOM staff, Implementing Partners and other stakeholders as needed.
  4. Act as a national liaison between the Protection Unit and government actors in coordination with relevant IOM units. Maintain good relations with key government partners working on protection related themes.
  5. Identify protection risks and needs of IDPs in vulnerable situations and coordinate a timely and safe referral to specialized protection services in case of need.
  6. Participate in relevant coordination forums and discussions at country level, including the Gender- Based Violence Sub-Cluster and developing strong, collaborative relationships with other GBV stakeholders.
  7. Verify that protection activities are implemented in coordination with other IOM sectors and according to IOM protection standards and principles.
  8. Verify that gender and protection activities are mainstreamed during the implementation of protection activities.
  9. Provide support and advice to the Protection Coordinator, senior management of the CO and Programme Managers for the development of an IDP protection strategy to facilitate the centrality of protection in Sudan CO’s programming.
  10. Undertake duty travel as required.
  11. Perform any of duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited academic institution or
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experiences as above.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of work experience in the field of migration and/or protection.
  • Prior experience in working with mixed migrant population (especially victims of trafficking and survivors of gender-based violence) on protection and direct assistance.
  • Experience in communicating and working with a wide range of actors, including people of culturally diverse backgrounds, government and authorities, humanitarian actors (UN agencies and NGOs).
  • Computer literacy and skills with specific proficiency in Microsoft applications.
  • Detail-oriented, reliable, efficient, high level of professionalism, organizational skills and ability to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.

Skills

  • Experience in displacement, Countertrafficking, and Gender-Based Violence, or other protection programming (required).
  • Experience in managingand/or implementing projects.
  • Experiencein delivering Protection trainings to internal and external audiences (required).
  • Good written and oral communication skills, effective in representation and liaison with external parties (required).
  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills(required).
  • Flexibility in working overtimewhen needed (required).
  • Computer literacy(Microsoft Word and Excel) (required).
