Help2read is a child literacy organisation, which operates in the Western Cape and Gauteng Provinces, South Africa. Our vision is that all South African children leave primary school literate and enjoy reading.We do this by recruiting and training reading volunteer helpers who spend one-on-one time with learners on a weekly basis.Almost 80% of South African learners have not developed basic reading skills by the time they reach Grade 5. Help2read works with these learners to improve their reading skills.Need: More volunteers! Help2read volunteers assist struggling learners with their reading, enabling them to develop a love of reading whilst growing their levels of confidence and self-esteemValuesOur values are:• Team culture • Transparency • Integrity • Respect • EmpathyKey Features of Help2read’s Success• Quality Training Volunteers receive training which empowers them to work with struggling learners on a one-to-one basis, and to help and encourage them by a positive attitude, understanding and a commitment to work with each child for 2 half hour sessions each week for a full year.• Fieldworker Support The regular support provided by help2read fieldworkers, ensures that volunteers are retained and remain committed to the programme.• Continuing Development Training does not end following the volunteer’s placement in the school but continues with regular refresher workshops, the updating of training manuals, book exchanges, and the provision of guidance so that a volunteer’s skills and knowledge are constantly developed.• Resources Help2read provides fun books, games and other materials which are quite different from books the learner will see in the classroom to encourage a love of reading.• Child Safety All staff and volunteers on the help2read programme undergo a police criminal record check and have to adhere to a strict code of conduct.
