The accounting and finance internship is designed to provide practical work experience in accounting program support. The intern will be involved in a variety of administrative and accounting tasks related to the day-to-day operation of the NGO.
Internship goals and learning objectives/benefit to the intern:
The student will learn about and develop a better understanding around:
- Finance processes in the NGO environment
- Practice of an integrated system (ERP)
- Finance related administrative tasks such as office organization, filing systems, program/customer support, interactions with third party partners and application of technology (including Word, Excel, Outlook, ERP).
- Intern will gain exposure to finance/accounting-related program support activities and processes for an international NGO
Skills to be developed and/or expanded during internship:
- NGO finance culture;
- Use of Accounting software
- Meeting facilitation
Proposed activities:
As a finance assistant, the intern will:
- Enter invoices through the system
- Prepare payment following Accounts Payables process and procedure
- Prepare field office payment vouchers and expense reports with appropriate documentation of all transactions for the office
- Scan and archive Financial report documents
- Ensure that all office accounts (i.e. telephone, internet, building services, office rent, taxes and vendors) are paid in an appropriate and timely manner
- Prepare payroll taxes and any other taxes
Learning outcomes (how the Intern’s performance will be evaluated):
With consistent mentorship and direction provided during the internship, the intern’s performance will be evaluated based on:
- Regular weekly meetings and feedback from internship supervisor to evaluate progress and completion of internship activities
- Ability to coordinate/contribute to teams’ accounting needs
- Effective participation and collaboration with the team
Required skills and experience:
- Prior experience of at least 2 years in an accounting department
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Experience using Microsoft Office
- Fluency in French and English
- Ability to work autonomously
- Ability to use multimedia software programs and integrated systems (ERP)
