Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Governance Affairs office engages with and guides all relevant stakeholders ranging from Member States, Major Groups and Stakeholders as well as the Private Sector. The intern will be located in the Civil Society Unit of the Governance Affairs Office within UN Environment, Nairobi.

  1. The Civil Society Unit, engages on civil society matters and ensures effective participation of Major Groups and Stakeholders in the work of UN Environment at all levels. Civil society is a crucial partner to UN Environment, who provides long-term, broad-based and essential support for UN Environment’s mission and mandate.

This internship is for 3 to 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Work Areas: (a) Logistics, communication and administration towards the March 2019 Environment Assembly’s preparation;

(b) Accreditation of civil society organizations, database management, website management, client servicing, managing the registration portals for participants to meetings;

(c) Promote and strengthen civil society engagement at regional and global level towards the 2019 UN Environment Assembly with a focus on supporting regional consultative meetings, preparatory conferences and workshops, assist in the preparation of background documents and meeting reports;

(d) Support towards meeting planning and organization, as well as all relevant communication aspects in relation to the upcoming meetings and conferences on the way to the Assembly, such as website updates, social media support, reports and other communication material;

(e) Assist with logistics, communication, registration and reporting before and during the 2019 Assembly to facilitate the participation and activities of civil society;

(f) Assist with website management, updates of website content and their uploads, design and structure of main website, social media outreach and other IT matters if applicable.

(g) Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Computer literacy: Have basic knowledge in website management and design.
