Thembalitsha is the vision of husband and wife, Frank and Kate Christie, who established the Foundation as a registered NPO in 1997. The first project successfully launched was Graceland Preschool, a project serving the children of needy farmers in Stellenbosch. From there we were able to develop Themba Training and School of Hope, two projects located in underserved areas of Cape Town, the former of which provides micro-business and sewing skills to interested learners in the community and the latter which provides a second chance at education for at-risk youth. Our next iniatives expanded the Foundation's focus to include the community of Grabouw, located 60 km east of Cape Town. We began by opening ThembaCare Grabouw, providing the only 24-hour hospice in Grabouw as well as home-based care for hundreds of vulnerable patients, followed by Village of Hope, a 13-bed haven for children who have been infected with or affected by HIV or TB.In recent years, Thembalitsha has also adopted Mama Themba (formally known as Bosom Buddies), which was birthed as a ministry from Every Nation Somerset West but grew into a successful project providing prenatal care and counselling for new mothers. EduCare Grabouw provides ten early childhood development centres throughout the townships of Grabouw that have hundreds of preschool students attending each day. Agape Educare, in Zola, Strand provides education and loving care in an early childhood development centre is now a Thembalitsha project. Lastly, the newest addition to the Thembalitsha family is Themba Connect - a community training centre in Adelaide, Eastern Cape, with a mission to connect people and potential through training.Today, we employ over 100 people, serve thousands each year and are supported by fantastic volunteers from across the globe. It has been an amazing journey from Frank and Kate's lounge to becoming the foundation we are today, transforming lives through these essential initiatives in education, healthcare and training.
