About the Job

the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.

Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With more than 250 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies at continental, regional and national level in more than 40 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance, Sustainable Economic Growth, Health and Social Development, as well as Just Transition.

The programme “Support to the African Union in the areas of Peace, Security and Governance” (AUPSG) is commissioned by BMZ and implemented in partnership with the AU Commission. It supports the effective implementation of the AU’s peace, security and governance policies and instruments and works along three fields of action: strengthening the institutional capacities of the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), including the coherent implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA); strengthening structural conflict prevention and the AU’s crisis early warning and response system together with state and non-state actors; and establishing an implementation process for the Common African Position on Climate Change, Peace and Security. Across these fields, the programme draws on African expertise, supports policy dialogue between the AU, the Regional Economic Communities and member states and promotes gender-responsive and inclusive approaches. Within the programme, you are the main contact for results-based monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and serve as the programme’s M&E focal point within the wider GIZ AU Portfolio. You work closely with the programme’s Communications Focal Person to translate results and evidence into accurate and compelling impact communication.

Your main activities include:

  • Leading the results-based monitoring and evaluation of the programme: operating and further developing the M&E system along the results matrix, planning and coordinating data collection, and safeguarding data quality, plausibility and documentation
  • Preparing results-based reporting to the commissioning party and internal reporting, including evidence of the programme’s contribution to impact, and contributing to operational planning, evaluations, appraisals and audits
  • Advising colleagues and partners on results and impact orientation, indicator interpretation, monitoring of contributions to impact and evidence-based steering, including training and guidance on relevant M&E instruments and tools
  • Serving as the programme’s M&E focal person within the wider GIZ AU Portfolio, ensuring coordination and information exchange on monitoring, results and impact reporting, and the timely provision of programme data and evidence to portfolio-level M&E processes
  • Cooperating closely with the programme’s Communications Focal Person and the wider team on results and impact communication, including translating monitoring data and evidence into accessible communication products and ensuring that reported achievements are verified, accurate and aligned with the programme’s results framework
  • Providing advisory services to PAPS and further AU organs and partners on the implementation of APSA and AGA and on coordination between the AU Commission, the Regional Economic Communities and member states
  • Supporting the preparation, implementation and documentation of policy dialogues, workshops, trainings and expert meetings with AU and member state partners
  • Supporting cooperation with African think tanks, research institutions and civil society organisations in order to strengthen evidence-based decision-making within the AU
  • Serving as liaison to consultants and external service providers, including support to tendering, contracting and quality assurance of external contributions
  • Contributing to knowledge management, learning and the communication of results within the programme and across the GIZ AU Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention sector and the wider GIZ AU Portfolio
  • Coordinating all issues within the area of work in consultation with team colleagues and the line manager, ensuring they are dealt with promptly and competently, resolving problems on the basis of existing rules and drawing attention to more complex challenges within the team
  • Performing other tasks assigned by the line manager, where required

GIZ offers customised solutions to complex challenges. We are an experienced service provider and assist the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation. We offer demand-driven, tailor-made and effective services for sustainable development.

GIZ staff work in thematically diverse projects and programmes in widely different countries throughout the world. What do they all have in common? A shared goal – to develop sustainable and effective solutions. In GIZ’s short film, we accompany four employees through one day in their working lives and see what impact they have on the people in our partner countries.

In September 2015, heads of state and government at the UN Summit in New York adopted the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development comprising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its 17 goals go far beyond the millennium development goals, which expired at the end of 2015, and they also apply equally to all countries.
