Based in Johannesburg, the Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre to end violence against women (TLAC) is a multi-disciplinary nonprofit organisation that promotes the right of women to live free from violence. We do this through research, advocacy, capacity building and impact litigation.

TLAC seeks to appoint, an Attorney, based in Johannesburg.

The Attorney will manage the legal services and advocacy programme.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day to day running of the legal clinic
  • Provide legal advice and support to victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV)
  • Initiate and conduct litigation (from drafting and serving papers to court appearance)
  • Assist with high impact public interest litigation on behalf of TLAC and our clients in connection with GBV and women’s human rights
  • Undertake a strategic role in developing litigation strategies and in implementing campaigns
  • Conduct community outreach in different areas
  • Undertake training with community based organisations and assisting in establishing a legal forum on Domestic Violence and Maintenance
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of training programmes and materials around the law
  • Effectively translate legislation into training material that is understood by different stakeholders
  • Assist with planning, co-ordination and implementing strategic training and education activities identified by TLAC
  • Support the development and updating of the organisation’s website to market the legal clinic and uploading of relevant resources
  • Together with the Training Unit identify and develop potential training opportunities aimed at audiences ranging from rural communities to legal professionals
  • Develop and utilise relevant tools to support training with a sustainable impact; including pre- and post-assessment tools, toolkits, checklists and other resources
  • Implement training based on project and donor requirements
  • Assisting with development and implementation of action plans for training in co-ordination with partners
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the training content is responsive; and that the necessary co-operation is received
  • Identify and addressing any risks which may adversely affect training proactively; and with the support of management where required
  • Compile training reports with the assistance of the Training Coordinator

Requirements:

  • BA LLB, with admission in the High Court as an attorney
  • Three to five years’ post-article experience, with experience in High Court and Magistrates’ Court litigation
  • Training experience
  • Experience in developing training and public education materials; preferably on human rights
  • A strong commitment to gender equality and experience in, or knowledge of, the gender-based violence sector
  • Strong negotiation, consultative and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all internal and external partners
  • Willingness to travel and work in rural and outlying areas
  • Team player and ability to operate in a collaborative manner
  • Driver’s license and own car is essential
  • Ability to speak/understand at least one other South African language is preferred
  • Commitment to Human Rights and Gender Equality
