Background
Vétérinaires Sans Frontières – Germany (VSF Germany) is a non-governmental, non-profit making international Organization, engaged in the field of veterinary relief and development work providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance. With support in animal health, agriculture, marketing, and food safety, VSFG works towards food security and strengthened
livelihoods of pastoralist communities. VSF Germany implements activities in Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Somalia.
VSF Germany seeks to recruit qualified and well experienced staff for the position of Boat/Field Vehicle Driver (1 Position) to be based at VSF Germany Field office location in Fangak and Pigi/Canal counties with frequent field travel in the two counties in South Sudan. The holder of this position will have an overall environmental and social safeguards oversight for all projects implemented in South Sudan Country Program under VSF Germany.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
This position will be assigned the following duties and responsibilities:
• Provide reliable and secure river transport services for VSF Germany staff, assets, and project supplies across the Nile/Zeraf river networks between Fangak and Pigi/Canal counties.
• Conduct daily pre-departure checks of the boat hull, outboard engines (propellers, fuel lines, spark plugs), fuel/oil ratios, battery levels, steering mechanisms, and onboard safety equipment.
• Ensure all mandatory safety gear (life jackets, oars, bilge pumps, anchor, first aid kits, waterproof communication tools) is functional and that all passengers wear personal flotation devices before leaving the dock.
• Supervise the safe loading, balancing, and securing of project supplies (e.g., veterinary vaccines, equipment) to prevent capsizing or water damage.
• Utilize the boat and field assets strictly for authorized official project trips approved by the designated supervisor. Maintain rigorous records of boat/vehicle usage, including fuel consumption logs, engine running hours (or mileage logs for field vehicles), and clear trip registries.
• Responsible for daily cleaning, routine outboard engine servicing (changing plugs, cleaning fuel filters), and promptly reporting major mechanical faults to the logistics team.
• Assist in receiving, delivering, and handling official project documentation and field supplies at docking points and project sites.
Experience, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
• Secondary education completion.
• Must possess a valid, applicable marine/boat operations certification or proven local authority clearance for motorized boat piloting, alongside a valid driving license for field vehicles.
• Minimum of 4 years’ work experience operating motorized boats (outboard engines) in complex river environments, swamps, or flood-prone wetlands. Additional experience driving light field vehicles (4×4) is required.
• Strong working knowledge of local river geography, seasonal water-level variations, hidden sandbars, floating vegetation risks (Sudd blockages), and safe docking procedures.
• Hands-on skill in basic marine engine troubleshooting, clearing fouled propellers, and executing emergency repairs stranded in remote field locations.
• At least 2 years of work experience with International/local NGO working environment, preferably navigating the context of Jonglei State.
• Language Requirements: Fluent in in the predominant local language and fair in Arabic and English.
