About Us

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade certified producers and workers in Africa. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and Middle East and North Africa.  Established  in  2005,  FTA  aims  to effectively  represent  producers  and  workers  within  the  International  Fairtrade  System  and provide services to them that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods. FTA Secretariat is located in Nairobi where the operations are in the hands of the FTA Senior Leadership Team (FTA-SLT). In enabling the members to have a strong voice in the governance, strategy and the overall direction of the Fairtrade movement in Africa, the FTA-SLT has the responsibility for directing and managing all FTA resources including employees. The FTA-SLT has the overall responsibility of strategy development and operational implementation.The Finance and Administration Director (FAD) is expected to be an active member of team.

About ‘Dignity For All (D4A) Impact Programme’- (FTA and Fairtrade Finland Partnership Programme):

This is a four year (2018-2021) Programme funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Finland. Underpinned by the Fairtrade Theory of Change (ToC), the D4AA Impact Programme seeks  justice  and fairness  through  exercising  rights  and  freedoms,  empowerment  through strengthening the assets and capabilities of the most marginalized farmers and workers, and the attainment of sustainable livelihoods through building resilient agro-based trade systems and societies.

The  programme  is  aimed  at  capturing  and  assessing  simultaneous  change  in  four  areas (spheres of change): Small producer & worker organizations; Supply chain business practices; Consumer behaviour and Civil society action.

The programme has six projects that are currently being implemented in Ghana, Ethiopia, Malawi and South Africa in banana, flowers, wine, tea (Hired Labour), coffee and cocoa (Smallholder producers) value chains. It focuses on FTA key thematic areas of gender and social compliance, workers’ rights, living income and living wage.

This role will mainly entail overall implementation of project activities for Dignity For All (D4A) Coffee Impact Project (100%) that targets 3 Fairtrade-certified Coffee Unions i.e. Sidama, Yirgacheffe and Bench Maji with support of Field Officers at each of the beneficiary coffee.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Main purpose of job
  • Responsible for all deliverables of D4A Coffee project, including specific outputs andoutcomes laid out in approved project plans for the target 3 Fairtrade-certified CoffeeUnions i.e. Sidama, Yirgacheffe and Bench Maji
  • Prepare and submit project field reports within the approved MEL framework in timelymanner, sharing performance progress on project outputs, including quarterly narrative and financial reporting using FTA and donor reporting templates
  • Proactively identify bottlenecks and successful strategies needed for effective realization of D4A Coffee project objectives
  • Act as a key point of contact for queries from FTA, target beneficiaries and stakeholders in Ethiopia Coffee issues are dealt with promptly and efficiently
  • Adhere to Fairtrade Africa operational and implementation standards
  • Contribute to achievement of Fairtrade Africa’s D4A Programme goal
  • Develop programmes and work plans for Training of Trainers (ToTs)/ Programme Officers
  • Coordinate FTA and stakeholder contact with target organizations, and facilitate their participation in the country/product network activities
  1. Identify Future Opportunities and Programs
  • In liaison with the Project Coordinator identify further opportunities for D4A programme and Coffee projects development in Ethiopia
  • With FTA’s Product Manager for Coffee, coordinate responses to market queries regarding Fairtrade market opportunities for produce from the target unions
  • Oversee D4A activity implementation conducted by Liaison officers of various target unions
  1. Stakeholder Management Support
  • Represent FTA in country level and regional events
  • Build strong relationships with external and internal stakeholders to determine needs and requirements
  • Understand producer needs and concerns and ensure these needs are communicated appropriately for FTA and stakeholder benefit

Skills and Experiance Required

Minimum Academic Requirement

  • Bachelor’s Degree in / Agronomy/ Coffee production/ Agribusiness/ Rural
  • Development or related fields
  • Diploma in Project Management or/and Project Management Certificate will be an added advantage

Minimum Years of Relevant Experience:

  • At least 1- 2 years’ experience in similar position
  • Knowledge of Systems and Procedures:
  • Working knowledge and experience of developing business and strategic plans for organizations; Coffee GAPs and GPPs;
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Ethiopian coffee sector;
  • Capacity building techniques for farmers (adult training)

Skills required

  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • Good command of at least one local language in target areas
  • Experience in training and report writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with individuals across multi- functional and cultural disciplines
  • Prudent management of financials or other resources.

Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa is the independent non-profit umbrella organisation representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organisations certified against international Fairtrade standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cotton, bananas, mango and non-traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organisation represents over 1,050,000 producers across 33 countries in Africa.

Fairtrade Africa is a membership-based organisation. The General Assembly (GA) held every two years is the highest decision making body. All members have the right to participate and vote for the election of the Fairtrade Africa Board through their regional representatives at the GA.

We work through primary structures such as product groups, country partnerships and regional networks which enable members to have a strong voice in the governance and management of the organisation. We operate four regional networks: Eastern and Central Africa Network (FTA-ECAN) based in Nairobi, Kenya; West Africa Network (FTA-WAN) based in Accra, Ghana and Southern Africa Network (FTA-SAN) based in Cape Town, South Africa.
