Amref Health Africa partners with the Government of Ethiopia and local communities to implement diversified health and WASH project portfolios throughout the country, focusing on three key programmatic areas: Reproductive Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Adolescent and Youth Health (RMNCAYH), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and Communicable and Non-Communicable diseases. We implement projects in Addis Ababa, Afar, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, Somali, SNNP regions and nationwide health systems strengthening interventions focusing on the Health Extension Program.

Amref Health Africa is recruiting a Business Development Manager to be based in Addis Ababa (Country Office). S/he will report to the Country Director.

 

Job Summary

This position is responsible in growing the Amref Health Africa program portfolio by aligning with programs’ strategic priorities. S/he implements and manages the Amref’s resource mobilization plan; this entails coordinating and working closely with program, finance and operations teams towards a harmonized & efficient BD processes & system; managing the existing institutional and private donors (foundation or corporate grants, international or multinational donors); identifying and analyzing new potential donors; implementing a business development information system (tracking, pipeline coordination & donor intel) and ensuring submission of quality proposals. This position will be part of the global business development team and will coordinate with headquarter and European and North America offices (ENA).

Specific Focus Areas

 

New Business Development & Partnership Management

  • Understand the existing program portfolio to implement the organization’s resource development plan; update plans on a regular basis and communicate progress to country director;
  • Develop program core capacity statements to strengthen the organization’s strategic positioning in coordination and collaboration with programs and communications units;
  • Conduct regular field visits to determine program needs and to identify new opportunities for expansion in Ethiopia; work with program teams to develop concept notes, business cases and business opportunity briefs and social entreprise initiatives;
  • Participate in external meetings, events and visits to identify potential institutional and private donors; gather information intelligence to identify potential opportunities;
  • Manage relationships with existing donors and connect with Amref ENA offices to support external donors; lead donor visits at the country and field office levels;
  • Lead the implementation of the organization’s donors’ communication plan in coordination with the communications unit; contribute to the development of communication materials targeting specific donors;
  • Manage the organization’s business development strategic information database that includes prospective donors; opportunity trackers including institutional and private donors’ forecasts for Ethiopia, and proposals in the pipeline;
  • Coordinate with headquarter and ENA offices to maintain and follow up on opportunities. Establish communications with ENA offices for progress updates on business development initiatives.

Proposal Development

  • Establish the organization’s strategic position for opportunities and assess the risk and competitiveness of a new business opportunity;
  • Coordinate the decision to bid or not bid process on potential calls in consultation with the Country Director; communicate with headquarter on country decision for proposal application and obtain feedback;
  • Lead the proposal development process and submission by formulating win-themes, leading strategy sessions, drafting a responsive results-based framework/logframes, writing a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation plan and preparing budgets for donors;
  • Develop proposal writing outlines, calendars and manage proposal teams; lead review processes and proposal components; coordinate inputs from HR, Programs, and Budgeting and Financial Analysis teams; ensure high-quality, donor responsive and compliant final submission;
  • Liaise and coordinate with program, finance, HR, admin and procurement unit to engage all programmatic and technical experts for a successful proposal submission;
  • Lead partner relations and negotiations during proposal process including partner packages and monitoring partner deliverables;
  • Mobilize start-up team upon successful proposal and engage in start-up plans for successful projects, ensuring proper hand-over to programs team.

Job Requirements

  • Relevant Master’s degree (MPH, MBA, MPA, etc.);
  • At least 8 years of demonstrated business development experience within the international health and development sector with institutional and private donors;
  • In-depth understanding in global health and development priorities and experience working in these settings;
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and experience in managing donor partnerships;
  • Advanced understanding of proposal compliance parameters within the international development sector for priority donors such as USAID, DFID, and others;
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills including strong English grammar; proofreading and editing skills; all applicants must undergo a writing evaluation;
  • Demonstrated experience leading and coordinating business development teams with successful results.
