Background

Plan International Nigeria is an independent development and humanitarian non-profit organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. Plan International Nigeria recently refreshed and updated its Country Strategy for the period FY2024-FY2028. This was done following the launch of the Plan Global Strategy in 2022. The new Country Strategy titled “Girls are empowered to take action and drive change” reflects Plan Nigeria’s focus over the next five years. Within this strategy, we aim to ensure that 20 million girls LEARN, LEAD, DECIDE AND THRIVE in Nigeria.

Plan International’s partnership principles ensures equal terms in a formal, mutually agreed collaboration with shared goals and responsibilities. Our collaboration ensures mutual benefit of skills, knowledge and resources from both partners as we work together, so that our voice and the voices of children and young people are clearly heard. Plan International Nigeria wants to identify and build a growing and enthusiastic network of partners across Nigeria.

Objectives

The main objective of this exercise is to identify potential partners and increase our pool of qualified organizations to select from, for our interventions in various locations across Nigeria. The following are the specific objectives the exercise aims to achieve:

  1. To identify the different categories of partners to work with;
  2. To determine the characteristics and the value addition of potential partners;
  3. To validate the identified partners for their inclusion in our partnership database;
  4. To update Plan Nigeria partnership database in line with our new country strategy.

Criteria for Application

Interested partners must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a legal entity duly registered in Nigeria
  • Focused on promoting protective environment for the girl’s right
  • Strong Influencers of change in negative social norms regarding women and girls
  • Gender responsive and transformative
  • Women and girls focused and can show evidence of working with the Federal and/or State government
  • Have expertise in child protection and safeguarding programming

It should also meet at least 2 of the criteria below

  • Expertise in Youth Economic Empowerment programming
  • Expertise in education, livelihood, health & nutrition, peace building and conflict management
  • Youth-led organization
  • Girls-led organisations
  • Academic institutions
  • Coalitions, Unions and movements
  • Media (print, broadcast, online)
  • Bloggers

Project location

Partners must have an operating base in the FCT or any of the states of the Federation

Plan International is an international organisation or development which works in 51 countries across Africa, the Americas, and Asia to promote the safeguarding of children.It is a nonprofit organisation and is one of the world's largest organisations based on children, it works in 58,000 communities with the help of volunteers to improve how 56 million children live. The charity also has 21 national organisations who have been given the responsibility to oversee the raising of funds and awareness in their individual countries.

The organisation puts an emphasis on communities working together in order to address the needs of children around the world. The NGO focuses on child participation, education, economic security, emergencies, health, protection, sexual health (including HIV), and water and sanitation. It provides training in disaster preparedness, response and recovery, and has worked on relief efforts in countries including Haiti, Colombia and Japan.

Plan International also sponsors the Because I Am a Girl campaign, which has published many stories focusing on the struggle of young women in the developing world.

Plan International was founded during the Spanish Civil War by British journalist John Langdon-Davies and aid worker Eric Muggeridge. When they witnessed the conflict change the lives of children, they founded ‘Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain’, which would later change its name to Plan International. Set up in 1937, the organisation provided food, shelter and clothing to children whose lives had been destroyed by the war.
