The Africa Team is seeking to recruit a Campaign Officer for our Animals in Farming (AiF) campaign as a key step in driving our global strategy to move the world to protect animals. The position is based at the Africa Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Main Purpose of the Role

​The Campaign Officer will work directly with the Campaign Manager – AiF to provide specialized campaigning expertise in our ongoing and emerging work within the Farming campaigns in Africa. He will be involved in the development and implementation of the annual Farming campaigns work plans and is expected to work closely with the Farming Integrated Campaign team (ICT) and external stakeholders to achieve the Farming campaign goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Functional

  • Ensuring that the strategic project goals are delivered in a timely and effective manner in co-operation with the Campaigns Manager AiF and all other relevant staff.
  • Maintaining relationships with a network of key external stakeholders relevant to the execution of the global campaign and specific project objectives.
  • Undertaking lobbying activities in support of all Farming campaigns and to proactively build relationships with relevant stake holders, policy makers and/or opinion leaders;
  • Undertaking corporate engagement activities in support of all Farming campaigns and to ensure positive and strategic relationships are built in line with both campaign and organisational objectives.
  • Contributing to the development of effective tools and technical support for all the Farming campaigns working closely with issue experts and technical advisors.
  • Contributing to the quarterly reports from activities undertaken to deliver on the approved Farming campaign project plan.
  • Supporting research on specific Farming campaign issues in collaboration with the Research team whenever required.
  • Communicating the World Animal Protection’s positions and messages to external and internal audiences when assigned, including public fora, the media, political, economic and other actors to promote key messages and further campaign and specific project objectives.
  • Representing World Animal Protection and its interests at meetings with external bodies, conferences, media and other public settings to further the Farming campaign objectives.
  • Carrying out administrative duties e.g. budget management, contract development, event management, monitoring and evaluation and any other tasks as reasonably requested.
  • Maintaining a strong knowledge of current affairs relating to the Farming campaigns, identifying opportunistic campaign amplification and actions.
  • Providing event organisation and co-ordination for Farming campaign activities involving both internal and external audiences.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of World Animal Protection’s international priority issues and relevant issues on African animal welfare which might inform campaign strategies and plans.

2. Organizational

  • Assisting the Campaign Manager – AiF in the delivery of World Animal Protection’s Global Strategy across the core themes of Mission, Movement & Transformation within a global matrix environment.
  • Working cooperatively with external organisations, teams within World Animal Protection and in the wider animal welfare movement to pursue project objectives and wider organisational goals, including those relating to brand, communications, fundraising and resource management.
  • Actively participating in building our brand and maintaining the integrity of our brand to support our profile, lead generation, income and engagement.
  • Helping secure resources and reaching people & partners by actively contributing to our supporter relationships, communications and reporting.
  • Actively participating and supporting the organisation to ensure that we manage our resources (financial, staff and IT) efficiently and effectively by improvement of systems, reporting and compliance.
  • Contributing to a learning culture and creating a positive working environment.

Qualifications

1. Essential

  • A University degree with at least 3 years relevant working experience preferred.
  • Highly motivated campaigner, with a proven track record of effective delivery of projects.
  • Excellent project co-ordination and delivery skills.
  • Strong research, analytical and decision-making skills
  • Team player with great interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationship across internal and external departments and teams.
  • Strong communicator capable of constructively engaging external and internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills,
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work unsupervised in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Flexibility to undertake international travel and work after hours when required.

2. Desirable

  • Knowledge of Animal Welfare issues especially in intensive livestock production systems.
  • Experience of working effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders in different countries and different cultural contexts.
  • High level of awareness of global and regional social, economic, political, technological, legal and environmental issues relevant to animal welfare.
  • Experience of matrix management in a medium/large sized organisation.
  • Experience of working in an international NGO environment.
