Role Summary

The Chemistry Lab Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the delivery of practical chemistry education by ensuring the laboratory environment is fully prepared, safe, and efficiently managed. The role involves the preparation of chemical reagents, setup of experiments, and maintenance of laboratory equipment in accordance with established standards and safety regulations. The assistant works closely with instructors and students to facilitate hands-on learning, providing technical support during experiments while ensuring strict adherence to chemical safety protocols. Additionally, the position is responsible for proper chemical storage, waste disposal, and inventory control, contributing to a well-organized and compliant laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare laboratory sessions in advance by measuring, mixing, and organizing chemicals and reagents according to experiment requirements
  • Set up laboratory apparatus, glassware, and instruments prior to each practical session, ensuring readiness and functionality
  • Assist teachers and students during experiments by providing guidance on proper handling of chemicals and equipment
  • Monitor student activities to ensure compliance with laboratory safety rules and correct experimental procedures
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of chemicals, reagents, and consumables; notify supervisors of shortages in a timely manner
  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and segregation of chemicals based on compatibility and hazard classifications
  • Handle the safe disposal of chemical waste in accordance with institutional and environmental regulations
  • Clean, sterilize, and store glassware and equipment after use, ensuring readiness for subsequent sessions
  • Inspect laboratory equipment regularly and report faults, breakages, or maintenance needs
  • Maintain safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, fume hoods, and first aid kits in working condition
  • Keep accurate records of chemical usage, stock levels, and laboratory activities
  • Support the preparation of demonstration experiments and special practical sessions

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of chemical handling, storage, and disposal procedures, including hazard classification and labeling systems
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards, including the use of PPE, emergency response procedures, and risk mitigation practices
  • Ability to accurately prepare chemical solutions and reagents following standard formulas and procedures
  • High level of attention to detail to prevent errors in measurements, labeling, and experiment preparation
  • Good organizational and inventory management skills to track chemicals and laboratory supplies efficiently
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and records related to laboratory activities and stock levels
  • Effective communication skills to assist students and collaborate with teaching staff
  • Basic problem-solving skills to identify and address laboratory-related issues
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of safety and accuracy
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
About You

Qualification and Experience

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Laboratory Technology, Chemistry.
  • Prior experience working as a laboratory technician in a school, college, or research setting is an advantage.
  • Practical knowledge Chemistry laboratory equipment, apparatus, and procedures.
  • Training or certification in laboratory safety and chemical handling is an advantage.
