About the Job

SAFLII is seeking to recruit a dynamic and experienced professional to lead its team of content managers and technical staff. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for the law and a strong commitment to SAFLII’s mission and the quality of its offering; will have a hands-on approach, with a willingness to fully immerse themselves in the organisation’s work and contribute wherever needed; will have a strong commitment to strengthening the organisation, maintaining high standards, and continuously improving the quality and impact of SAFLII’s work; and will be an inspiring and motivating leader who works collaboratively and closely with their team.

The position is based in Cape Town.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership to SAFLII to achieve its objectives of supporting access to justice, judicial transparency and the rule of law;

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for SAFLII, for approval by the Board;

  • Active fundraising, including developing and maintaining relationships with existing and new donors and reporting to donors;

  • Daily work with the SAFLII team to maintain efficient and excellent service;

  • Manage all human resources aspects;

  • Work with SAFLII’s partners to develop SAFLII’s products;

  • Support SAFLII Board and Advisory Council by preparing all required documentation;

  • Prepare all reports, including an annual report;

  • Oversee and manage SAFLII’s financial resources, including the setting of budgets, forecasts, preparation of financial reports;

  • Promote SAFLII nationally and internationally amongst a wide range of groups, including the judiciary, legal profession, legal academy, students and journalists;

  • Keep ahead of and implement relevant developments in IT and AI.

Requirements

  • Leadership position in the NGO, legal information technology or library sectors;

  • A degree and at least eight years’ relevant post-degree experience;

  • Experience in the South African legal system, the structure and working of the judiciary and a demonstrated commitment to democracy, the rule of law, the protection of human rights and South Africa’s democratic constitutional order;

  • Experience in managing teams, including strategic planning, financial management, recruitment, performance appraisals, and work processes;

  • Experience in fundraising;

  • Demonstrated ability to build effective networks and strong partnerships with external organisations, including with donor organisations;

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Established skills in information technology, including basic software programming and the ability to develop and maintain websites;

  • Ability to work professionally in more than one South African language;

  • Experience in professional education in the law, librarianship or information technology sectors;

  • Experience with building a social media presence.
