We are looking for a technical person, ideally from the engineering sector, to help the leadership of Western Kenya WASH team adhere to high standards of technical competence and quality in designing, improving, and promoting WASH-related products, service, and innovations. The civil engineer has strong communication and project management skills, and the ability to create and review technical specifications that translate into workable implementation solutions for urban, rural and peri-urban communities in Western Kenya.

Your contribution
Under the supervision of the Market Based Sanitation Director, you will:
• Design and implement new product concepts to the rural and urban WASH market
• Prototype product concepts on field with consumers and local producers
• Make recommendations on technical appropriateness of proposed design concept
• Provide specification, design, bill of quantity and quality standards for new and existing WASH product concepts
• Develop technical training manuals and guidelines for WASH products
• Support project management related to product design and business model development
• Support institutionalization of technical training and quality control within government and private sector insitutions
• Travel to the field and review technical aspects of new product installation within communities/consumers
• Serve us a technical liaison for communication on technical aspects of WASH products

Your deliverables
• Technical design bill of quantity standard and specification
• Review reports with recommendations
• Technical training manual tailored to TOT trainings
• Prototype new product designs and pilot within users
• Technical quality assessment tools
• Program briefs, learning notes (in English), and other communication products
• Program reports (or sections)

What are we looking for? The basics
• MSc in Civil/Water Engineering or related fields.
• Minimum 7 years of civil engineering experience in WASH, preferably with a development organization.
• Demonstrated experience in technical quality assurance and improvement, with ability to document processes and systems in a digestible way and present them to management and staff.
• Experience with urban sanitation and improving FSM service delivery preferred.
• Citizen of Kenya;
• References will be required.
• Ability to live and work in Kisumu and surrounding counties
What would get us excited?
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with teams.
• Strong writing and presentation skills, particularly related to technical and market development topics.
• Previous experience in doing similar work in a development context.
• Fluency in spoken and written English mandatory

HISTORY

PSI was founded in 1970 to improve reproductive health using commercial marketing strategies. For its first 15 years, PSI worked mostly in family planning (hence the name Population Services International). In 1985, it started promoting oral rehydration therapy. PSI’s first HIV prevention project — which promoted abstinence, fidelity and condoms — began in 1988. PSI added malaria and safe water to its portfolio in the 1990s and tuberculosis in 2004.

HEALTH IMPACT

PSI has an uncompromising focus on measurable health impact and measures its effect on disease and death much like a for-profit measures its profits. Just last year PSI saved the lives of 9,246 mothers, prevented 3,896,671 unintended pregnancies, stopped 234,367 new HIV infections, and avoided 379,286 deaths due to diseases like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia that most threaten young children.
