JOB SUMMARY

The Communication Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation of communications policy, strategy and guidelines of IR Ethiopia and that of IRW in general. Accordingly, he/she will coordinate and support IRE’s media activities; leads on branding and marketing of IRE; takes responsibility for publications: design, printing and final edit; assists in managing and promoting events; assists in updating IRE’s website, social media accounts and subscribers’ database; acts as a liaison between the organization, the public, and the media to ensure that the IR brand remains top of mind; assists in developing campaigns; and team working.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

  1. Collaborates with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy following IR guidelines and donor requirements:
  2. Plans and executes strategic communications plans to proactively communicate the vision, goals and work of IR;
  3. Develop, support and promote organizational goals, including message development, social media content creation and media outreach:
  4. Develop and disseminate public relations materials that increase our visibility among community and partners:
  5. Write, edit, and distribute content, including capacity statement, publications, press/media releases, website content, annual reports, newsletter, speeches, and other marketing material that communicates the organization’s activities:
  6. Works closely with Program team to document best practices, success stories, lessons learned, case studies supported with photography and video clips that can be used for promotion of the work of IR Ethiopia as well as for fund raising and advocacy purposes to influence policy and practice.
  7. Responds to media inquiries, arrange interviews, and act as a spokesperson for the organization:
  8. Seeks opportunities to enhance the reputation of the brand, and coordinate publicity events as required:
  9. Assists in conducting awareness raising campaigns, events, information dissemination workshops, etc. for target groups:
  10. Actively builds relationships with key media people and social media influencers to raise IRE’s profile:
  11. Promotes and publicizes events and assists IRE’s departments in developing an annual events calendar and ensure timely progress of each event:
  12. Positively represents and promotes IRE as an organization to external agencies:
  13. Maintains a documentation management system, both hard copy and on IRW network and helps provides editorial support to reports to be submitted to donors and partners ensure seamless flow and effective communication.
  14. Undertakes any other duties and tasks appropriate to the post as may be required from time-to-time by the Country Director.

Job Requirements

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Post graduate level qualification or Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field with a minimum of 5 years and 7 years relevant experience respectively in a communications role, preferably in a humanitarian organization and can present samples of published works relevant to the job.
  • Have advanced skills in content writing, photography and videography.
  • Experience of Digital Asset Management tools.
  • Experience in managing/coordinating teams including creative and consultants/freelancers.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to remote, harsh environments, often for an extended period of time.

 Skills and Competences

  • Strong ability to write as well as develop photographic and video material in an inspiring, accurate and descriptive manner that is able to bring its reader/donor into proximity with right holders communities’.
  • Creative, inspiring and energetic, with an attention to detail
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Excellent knowledge of and familiarity with software for video editing and photo editing.
  • Good ability to work calmly under pressure to tight deadlines and balance competing priorities.
  • Results focused – ability to plan, co-ordinate and deliver objectives and targets with a positive drive to achieve results
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, content management systems, and social media platforms.
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles and action
  • Is committed to integrity and IR Values, upholding the highest standards in conduct.
