About the role:
The successful candidate will work within a small team to strengthen the communications capacity of a South African transgender and gender diverse persons organisation to develop evidence-based messaging strategies in support of their self-defined and self-led social change work. The overall objective project is to identify, frame, vet and test persuasive messages that South African LGBTQI activists can use to further their self-determined social change goals.
With guidance from the organization and its constituents, the consultant will conduct primary and secondary research to provide a robust understanding of the current landscape of messaging and perceptions of transgender and gender diverse communities in South Africa, in order to: identify some of the key drivers of attitudes and stereotypes, and identify strategic points of entry and opportunities to achieve positive gains and successes.
Duties:
- Consultations with the organisation about their research priorities and needs;
- Baseline mapping of audience attitudes
- Baseline assessment of the organisation’s current messaging;
- Development of a research work plan that details approach to attitudes mapping and research, and including methods for message testing/validation.
- Review and assess current research to identify near-term improvement recommendations as well as long-term solutions leveraging target audiences, allies, civil servants, and policy makers.
- Share knowledge by documenting findings in a report and presentation.
- Draft findings into a user-friendly strategic communication lesson sharing material.
Ideal Candidate:
- A deep commitment to social justice and feminist ethics.
- 3+ years experience conducting research within social justice sector, especially for LGBTIAPQ+, gender and/or women’s rights.
- Demonstrated understanding of South Africa’s LGBTIAPQ+ sector and overall related policies.
- Strong writing and analytical skills, with a record of publications
- Able to simply and effectively communicate research data and findings.
- A passion for pushing ideas and introducing new and irreverent approaches and methods.
- A good team player that can self-manage but deliver within strict deadlines.
- Excellent command of isiXhosa and/or isiZulu and/or Setswana, and English.
- Adaptable and flexible.
Duration: The consultancy is for a period of three months. The successful candidate is expected to start immediately.
Location: Johannesburg or Cape Town, South Africa
Fees: The total fee is R90 000 – R120 000, including all related taxes. CAP covers all travel, accommodation and meal costs related to the research project.
