The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is a global humanitarian organization of the Seventh Day Adventist Church which works with people in poverty and distress to create just and positive change. ADRA has been actively serving the communities of South Sudan for over 35 years. ADRA South Sudan’s thematic areas are health, education, food security and livelihood and emergency response.

ADRA South Sudan is recruiting a Communications Officer who will support the implementation of its marketing and communication strategy. We require someone who is proactive. The job holder will be required to lead and communicate, manage a quality service and deliver in line with the plans. He or she will report to the Programs Director.

Key Responsibilities

Accountable for delivering the communication strategy and communication programme implementation.

Gathers content and coverage of relevant country efforts to identify effective relevant country programme activities and results. Develops complementary, country specific and local community materials and activities.

Produces advocacy and communication materials (e.g. briefing notes, images, films, video, audio-visuals, web pages, etc.)

Responsible for drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.

Supervises and follows up on the production of advocacy and communication materials and oversees the qualitative aspects of production, (e.g., quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design, etc.)

Establishes or maintains an up-to-date documentation center for communication materials

Recommends appropriate information and communication materials for use in media, and other advocacy and communication activities.

Collaborate with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate.

Prepares background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assists in planning, logistics and administrative arrangements for them.

Monitors and evaluates the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintains a library of coverage (clippings, etc.).

Monitors and evaluates the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication materials to target audiences, and participates in the evaluation of their impact.

Monitors the public perception of ADRA in the country and recommends appropriate action to maintain a positive image for the organization.

Selection Criteria

BA in Mass Communication, Journalism or any related field, coupled with experience in communications, event management or public relations.

High level of skill and in depth understanding of marketing and communications.

Demonstrated success in achieving high quality outcomes in events management and project management.

Demonstrated experience in website maintenance

Excellent interpersonal, written and communications skills, with a high level of proficiency in content writing and ability to write to a high standard.

Demonstrated ability to implement an external communications strategy.

Experienced design skills with use of Adobe suite, Illustrator and Photoshop Excellent computer skills and understanding of database management and on-line research tools.
