About ORAM
Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration (ORAM) protects and empowers vulnerable and marginalized asylum seekers and refugees globally, creating sustainability and systemic change. We assist our clients with every step of their journey, working primarily in transit countries. Further details about ORAM can be found on their website.
Project Background
ORAM is committed to fostering self-reliance and improving the livelihoods of marginalized and vulnerable refugees. In Kenya, ‘ORAM’s target clients’ often face compounded challenges related to their refugee status, limited freedom of movement, and social stigma and discrimination, which significantly impede their access to safe and sustainable income-generating opportunities.
This project aims to address critical barriers by identifying and developing viable entrepreneurial and employment pathways within the poultry and cosmetology sectors. ORAM clients in Nairobi’s urban areas and Kakuma refugee settlements have demonstrated significant interest in these sectors through the establishment of businesses such as poultry farming (meat and egg production), nail parlors, makeup artistry, massage services, wig installation, and hairdressing etc. ORAM has supported almost 100 clients with relevant vocational skills training, basic business management training, and seed funding to establish these small enterprises.
A nuanced understanding of how the poultry and cosmetology value chains operate, including their barriers and opportunities, coupled with a deep consideration of the safety and unique needs of ORAM’s clients, is essential for designing effective and inclusive interventions.
Purpose and Scope of Work
This analysis will specifically identify and detail actionable and practical safe, viable, and inclusive income-generating opportunities, explore potential for business diversification, and unearth innovative business ideas for ORAM’s clients-refugee entrepreneurs, while also examining concrete avenues for their safe employment within these value chains. The consultant is expected to provide specific, evidence-based insights into how these opportunities can be realized, including the necessary steps, resources, and potential returns.
