Seefar Foundation is seeking threeCounsellors in Nigeria for a project that will deliver changes in knowledge, intentions and behaviours among people preparing to migrate irregularly or already in transit along the Central Mediterranean Route (CMR).

You will be responsible for providing guidance to individuals to increase awareness about migration issues, including the realities of life in destination countries, the status of migrants in destination countries, and the risks of the journey and alternatives. You will provide one-on-one consultations to potential irregular migrants, migrants in transit, and with community members of potential migrants.

You will provide one-on-one consultations remotely and in-person. You will also participate in events aiming to increase awareness about migration issues.

You must be empathetic, confident and influential. You must have at least 4 years of experience doing community-based work and have demonstrable interest in working with vulnerable communities. You must be intrinsically motivated, be well organised, and be effective communicators. Fluency in English and one other local language (Yoruba or Edo) is compulsory. You must be based in Lagos or Benin City.

Position terms

This is a full time, 12 month position. Although most of the job can be carried out remotely, Counsellors will need to attend all events in person. Additional ad hoc travel may also be required.

You will be required to participate in a paid, remote training from 24 – 28 July. Project activities begin on 31 July.

Start date: 24 July

Salary: EUR 1,500 monthly

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that they are able to receive EUR payments from overseas prior to applying for this role.

Selection Criteria

We are looking for someone with:

  • At least four years of community-based work experience in Nigeria;
  • Based in Lagos or Benin City;
  • Strong ties with the local community and institutions;
  • An excellent reputation in the local community;
  • Fluency in English and a local language (Yoruba or Edo)
  • Excellent communication skills including being comfortable talking and delivering information face to face and over the phone;
  • Excellent knowledge and use of social media and other communication channels such as WhatsApp;
  • Experience working with monitoring & evaluation tools such as Appsheet or KOBO;
  • Computer literacy and access to a stable Internet connection;
  • Strong knowledge of migration and trafficking issues;
  • Experience in psychosocial counselling and/or youth mentoring is highly desirable;
  • Interpersonal skills and an ability to coordinate with teams and local stakeholders;
  • Experience working with vulnerable groups, and a thorough understanding of confidentiality.

Deliver: Project and Mission Implementation

  • Conduct individual consultations, either face-to-face or over the phone, with the project’s target audience members to raise awareness about migration issues.
  • Organise and lead events to raise awareness of migration issues within target communities.
  • Deliver regular performance reports, and make yourself reachable during your working hours to your Supervisor and the Project Manager.
  • Gather insights from the field and regularly share them with your supervisor.
  • Research and update the project database with up to date information on local alternatives (job opportunities, training opportunities, etc.);
  • Liaise and build relationships with local stakeholders and the broader community of interest when requested, and represent Seefar as required.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings with other team members.

  • Represent and demonstrate the Enterprise’s values.
