Diakonia is a Swedish international development organization with the overall goal to change unfair political, economic, social and cultural structures that generate poverty, inequality, oppression and violence. Diakonia works with the most vulnerable people, local partners and other strategic actors for the fulfilment of the right of all people to live a life in dignity – irrespective of age, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, nationality, political conviction, religion, or sexual orientation and identity.

Diakonia has about 400 partner organizations in 30 countries. In Sub-Saharan Africa Diakonia employs 100 staff at country offices in Mozambique, DRC, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Mali and Burkina Faso; and the Regional Office in Kenya. Diakonia’s Africa programme is currently funded by Sweden, Swedish individual sponsors, EU, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, UN agencies and private foundations.

Diakonia in Burkina Faso is a major actor when it comes to ensuring accountability of decision makers and promoting a democratic culture, good governance and gender equality. Diakonia also works to promote socio-economic justice in particular in the mining sector and strengthens resilience of populations vulnerable to climate change. The majority of our work is implemented through local partner organizations.

We are expanding and are looking for a dynamic and transformational leader to lead the team in Burkina Faso.

Key responsibilities:

  • Supervise the development and implementation of the organization’s program strategy in Burkina Faso and ensure its alignment with both the global policy and legal requirements in the country;
  • Ensure overall leadership and oversee implementation of the program in Burkina Faso ensuring results and accountability towards the funders and the rights holders;
  • Ensure the effective management of resources, following ethical principles;
  • Supervise the management of and support to implementing partners, including proposals, annual and budgetary work plans, monitoring and evaluation and capacity building;
  • Ensure good public relations, maintain productive networking and collaborative initiatives with other organizations and funding partners;
  • Budget control;
  • Represent the organization in relevant forums and meetings;
  • Develop strategies to identify and attract potential partners and funders;
  • Manage and facilitate internal monitoring and external evaluation process and activities of the program;
  • Manage and provide leadership to the country team.

Education and competencies:

  • Advanced Degree in Development Studies, Political Science or related fields;
  • Proven experience in Program Management, Monitoring and Evaluation and fundraising;
  • Experience from managing staff;
  • Deep knowledge of the organization’s thematic areas i.e. democracy, human rights, gender, social and economic justice, peace and conflict and humanitarian support;
  • A minimum of seven years (7) progressive relevant experience in a development organization. At least 3 years in senior management with experience in finance and human resources.
  • Good command of English and French.
