The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgaduud regions), Nugaal and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood & resilience, Governance, protection, GBV, WASH and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people. The IRC Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) and Health team, have been working together to support women and girls for their health-psychosocial well-being through comprehensive health care and psychosocial activities services, recreational skill building activities in the safe space and community awareness creation to enhance the capacity of the community in preventing violence against women and girls and have knowledge on GBV reporting mechanisms. Economic and Social Empower (EASE) is another main component within the program which gives knowledge to women and girls on how to enhance their economic status as well as business skills through community based initiative known as village saving and loans association (VSLA). The IRC has received a three years grant from the World Bank to implement Somalia Inclusive Community Resilience and GBV Pilot project in Garowe. In this regard the IRC is seeking to recruit EASE community workers to be based in Garowe (Puntland).
JOB SUMMARY
The EASE community workers will be based in Garowe and will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the EASE program in the field. The community worker will be responsible for starting, monitoring and mentoring EASE groups, facilitating the Discussion Group Series and monitoring the implementation of business skills training. The position will report directly to the economic and social empowerment Officer and work hand in hand with WPE Prevention, Response officers and Case workers.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The responsibilities of the community worker include, but are not limited to:
- Work closely with the community to carry out EASE activities.
- Conduct EASE awareness raising in the community and mentor EASE groups on VSLA methodology.
- Distribute VSLA Toolkits to groups.
- Facilitate the Discussion Group Series with EASE members and spouses.
- Monitor implementation of business skills training and report findings to economic empowerment senior officer.
- Collect monitoring data for the VSLA and Discussion Group Series components of the EASE program as per the monitoring system in place.
- Actively address challenges in program implementation and propose solutions to Economic Empowerment senior officer.
- Work with economic empowerment senior officer to create detailed weekly and monthly work plans.
- Attend staff meetings and training events as required.
- Carry out any other tasks as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- High-school diploma
- Certificate in business administration, social work and social administration or related field
- Extensive experience working with community groups
- Strong mobilization skills
- Great communication skills and ability to clearly and effectively convey complex concepts to populations with limited numeracy and literacy skills
- Good organizational skills and ability to inspire people to action
- Proficient mathematical skills
- Experience in working in GBV programs
- Belief in and understanding of gender equality, women’s rights and empowerment
- Experience with GBV programs preferred.
