VVOB in Kenya

VVOB has a long history of working in Kenya and restarted activities in 2022, after almost a decade of absence. Our ongoing project, Implementing National Curriculum Reforms through App-based learning for school leaders in Secondary Education (INCREASE), is supporting the Ministry of Education (MoE) through our operational partner, Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI). Together, we are piloting an app-based blended training to support school leaders to steer the competency-based curriculum (CBC) reforms in junior schools. The focus of this programme is to strengthen the instructional leadership skills of school leaders nationwide, with cost-effectiveness in mind. Since March 2024, we also have a regional programme on Teacher Professional Development for Gender-Responsive Pedagogy.

Purpose of the function

At VVOB, we are committed to ensuring that learners worldwide enjoy their fundamental right to quality education, without exception. Our core values—commitment, integrity, respect, quality, and innovation—are at the heart of everything we do. As an Education Advisor specialising in blended learning, you will directly contribute to achieving this vision. Your role will be instrumental in designing, advising, and implementing blended learning approaches that empower our education partners. You will develop innovative, flexible, and impactful professional development for school leaders, fostering the advancement of effective education systems.

Position in the organisation

The Education Advisor reports to the Country Programmes Manager. You are part of and work closely with your direct Education and Monitoring & Evaluation colleagues. Furthermore, you work closely together with the Strategic Education Advisors in your country, and with the Global Strategic Education Advisors at VVOB head office. In this role, you will act as the key expert on blended learning, bridging pedagogical expertise and technological solutions to achieve VVOB’s goals.

You will:

  1. Provide specialised technical advice and guidance to both VVOB colleagues and external partners in the field of blended learning. Your support will help ensure the achievement of project outcomes and the facilitation of educational change processes using innovative blended learning methods.
  2. Actively contribute to the design, formulation, budgeting, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of projects, with a focus on delivering high-impact blended learning programmes. Your role includes integrating cutting-edge technology and pedagogy to enhance professional development for school leaders.
  3. Assume multiple roles in the capacity development of our education partners, tailored to their specific needs and the different phases of the programme. This includes training, coaching and mentoring partners in applying blended learning and facilitating educational reforms.
  4. Stay informed on the latest policy trends, research, and developments in blended learning and digital facilitation, both internationally and locally. By leveraging this knowledge, you enhance the programme’s relevance and effectiveness, sharing insights with both VVOB and its partners.

If you’re our Education Advisor on Blended Learning, your workweek at the office will include the following highlights:

  • You have a discussion with the Online Learning colleagues of the VVOB Blended Learning Squad about the pedagogical challenges related to online synchronus delivery of the training programme for school leaders and related access issues.
  • You proactively draft the Terms of Reference for the coming trainers’ preparation for the onboarding sessions of cohort 1 and share with your colleagues and manager for inputs and feedback.
  • LUNCH: a perfect time to catch up with your new colleagues or even go for a walk in the nearby Karura forest?
  • You organise a meeting with your communication colleague to work on the design of digital Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials for the app-based blended training.
  • You meet with your VVOB Monitoring & Evaluation colleague to finalise the MEAL plan of your project areas. This is the last meeting of an extensive collaboration work with your colleagues and partners. You’re already thinking and brainstorming about the capacity development of the operational partner in this area, before sharing your suggestions with your manager.
