MSF SA’s fundraising department is responsible for raising private funding, predominantly from individuals via mass marketing campaigns or one-to-one strategies, but also from Corporates, Trusts Foundations and Legacy, to support our humanitarian mission and our activities in the Southern African region.

Type of Contract: Mandated position: 3 years plus possibility of extension of 3 years.

Purpose of the job:

Develop and manage the implementation of the fundraising strategy of MSF-SA, through the direction of the team, in order to maximize the contribution of continuous resources to the MSF Movement. The role is to develop and implement a strategy to generate nett income aiming to meet or surpass a nett income target in line with MSF fundraising mission and principles. To increase the return on investment of the actions, ensuring the sustainability of the fundraising actions in the long term, diversifying the channels and adapting them to the South Africa society profile.

Reporting to: The General Director and working with MSF Southern Africa Fundraising team, international office team and movement-wide colleagues in a similar position.

Direct report team: 1 acquisition manager, 1 retention and loyalty manager, 1 database manager, 1 head of philanthropy and 1 business intelligence analyst currently.

DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and implement the donation strategy (regular and one-off), from acquisition to relationship actions, to ensure the sustainability of incomes and return of investment (ROI).
  • Develop and maintain effective supporter journeys for the development of relationships and retention.
  • Develop and implement a corporate, Foundation, Legacy and major donors’ strategy by customizing the fundraising actions, in order to ensure the development and growth of these relations.
  • Develop prospecting strategies to increase the individual donor base and philanthropic donor pool.
  • Responsible for the security of all donor’s information storage on the database and in any other platform, through the control of processes and procedures, to minimize legal and criminal risks and to safeguard the image of the MSF brand.
  • Promote and support alignment between the activities of the Communication and Fundraising department, in order to follow the same communication strategy and preserve the organizational brand.
  • Develop the leaderships on the team, using management tools, in order to keep high performance and achieve the area goals.
  • Ensure that all fundraising actions are in accordance with MSF principals.
  • Actively participate on the debates with the Fundraising areas of other MSF sections, meeting the demands and contributing to the whole movement.

Financial Planning and Budget Management:

  • Lead the annual plan planning process to produce effective strategies to achieve income targets across the range of income streams (including provision of the calculation bases).
  • Produce cost-effective budgets to achieve action plans.
  • Monitor and tracking the income and expenditure.
  • Ensure the Fundraising Department is kept within budget.

Staff Management:

  • Agreeing objectives and work plans.
  • Manage activity progress and performance through regular one-to-one line management discussion.
  • Plan the personal development programme for team members in all relevant skills.
  • Undertake performance reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and experience:

  • Master’s degree preferential; minimum of a graduate degree essential.
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a similar position (FR Director, or Deputy Director, or Head of a Fundraising Unit).
  • Experience of developing and implementing strategic and business plans.
  • 5+ years in different marketing areas (online, offline, general medias, branding and communication).
  • Knowledge of the fundraising environment and of a range techniques and disciplines which will support the cost-effective generation of income for MSF Southern Africa.
  • 5+ years in leadership management.
  • MSF experience preferred but not essential.

Skills and competences:

  • Brand position strategy, direct marketing tools, results analysis, team development, results tracking, innovations and marketing trends.
  • Effective dissemination of information to large, diverse groups Essential Skills and Knowledge.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Critical analysis of the political and economic context in order to develop strategies.
  • Analysis of the feasibility of outsourcing, management and selection of suppliers.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
