KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Implementation

• Coordinate the GAIM project activities according to the project description agreed upon with the AFD, other co-funders and partner.

• Build project chronogram, develop and implement project annual and quarterly plans to ensure that activities are carried out successfully on time and meets the agreed objectives of the wider strategy.

• Coordinate the development of plans for Cooperatives and their members participating in the project, to maximize their engagement and participation through excellent communication and relationship management.

• Support the production of regional communications materials including drafting articles for newsletters, assisting in compiling and drafting of producer experiences and sharing of best practices.

• Monitor the project global budget and in particular disbursements for field staff and all field activities and events.

• Ensure operational activities related to the capacity building of cooperatives:

• Strengthen cooperative services for the marketing and sales of products from diversified crops.

• Supervise 2 studies and ensure they are shared and beneficial to the cooperatives:

• Feasibility study on the establishment of a certified system that allows for payments to farmers for environmental services.

• Diagnosis of land tenure for the establishment of a registration service for plots and trees of beneficiary producers/households within partner cooperatives

• Report main progresses, obstacles to the Steering Committee to obtain validation or reorientation guidance to pursue the sound development of the project.

Team Management

• Plan, coordinate and execute the annual operational plan, providing the project team with the needed direction to achieve results and hold them accountable.

• Support staff in developing realistic work plans based programmatic needs.

• Regularly discuss performance, giving timely, constructive feedback, providing support to address issues and acting when necessary.

• Provide technical support, guidance and development for team members.

• Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement

• Organize Operational Committee’s meetings with the project Team to follow-up on operational progresses and potential obstacles

External Relations

• Liaise with the other organizations involved in the program, in particular:

o Max Havelaar France, as the intermediary between the project team and the main Funder AFD o Other co-financers and donors to

i) ensure their commitment is effective

ii) ensure those co-funders get the reports and material agreed on in each co-financing contract and

iii) promote deeper engagement, loyalty and maximizes long term value. o Other actors involved in the project or active in the sector and likely to i) benefit from the project experience and knowledge ii) speak positively about the project and potentially make it grow or duplicate it iii) be relays or allies in advocacy actions along with FTA and based on the project experience or capitalization iv) communicate and promote the project and more broadly Fairtrade positions and actions. •

Liaise with the SANKOFA 2.0 team to align calendars, activities and financial flows.

• Liaise with other department and technical people within the Fairtrade Africa to support the project team on every punctual need and to ensure the knowledge about the program is shared.

• Develop relationships with partners including identifying potential partners, nurturing relationships and support proposal writing. Reporting

• Lead and co-ordinate the preparation of financial, donor and project progress reports.

• Ensure the provision of reports on grants, M&E, Finance, Project activity

• Ensure the effective monitoring and evaluation of projects components: baseline, mid-term valuation, endline and continuous capitalization.

• Work with the M&E Officer in the collection of monitoring data to coordinate impact or evaluations of the GAIM project.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Agriculture or related field

• Masters in agronomy and related fields is an added advantage

• IT system certificates will be an advantage Experience and Knowledge

• A minimum of 7 years in agricultural development with team management experience

• Experience in supporting ethical and sustainable supply chains if possible in cocoa

• Knowledge of agricultural development and sustainable business practices

• Experience in field activities with cooperatives and smallholders’ farmers

• Knowledge and experience in financial management in complex contexts

• Knowledge of Fairtrade standards and processes is an added advantage Skills

• Good command of spoken and written English.

• Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with individuals across multi-functional disciplines

• Facilitation skills, in particular with agri-cooperatives

• Excellent communication skills

• Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills

• Project and financial management skills

Fairtrade is a global movement which addressees the injustices of conventional trade by supporting smallholder farmers and workers to secure better terms of trade.

Fairtrade Africa, a member of the wider International Fairtrade movement represents Fairtrade certified producers in Africa and the Middle East.

Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa is the independent non-profit umbrella organisation representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organisations certified against international Fairtrade standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cotton, bananas, mango and non-traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organisation represents over 1,050,000 producers across 33 countries in Africa.

Fairtrade Africa is a membership-based organisation. The General Assembly (GA) held every two years is the highest decision making body. All members have the right to participate and vote for the election of the Fairtrade Africa Board through their regional representatives at the GA.

We work through primary structures such as product groups, country partnerships and regional networks which enable members to have a strong voice in the governance and management of the organisation. We operate four regional networks: Eastern and Central Africa Network (FTA-ECAN) based in Nairobi, Kenya; West Africa Network (FTA-WAN) based in Accra, Ghana and Southern Africa Network (FTA-SAN) based in Cape Town, South Africa. We also have a new network in Middle East and North Africa  region whose regional office is soon to be established. The Fairtrade Africa secretariat is located in Nairobi, Kenya.. Fairtrade Africa has 50% ownership of the Fairtrade system.
