The Senior Advisor, Technical Excellence (TE), will be part of the TE team in the Crisis Response, Recovery, and Development (CRRD) departments as well as the Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) Unit. In this exciting and critical role, you will lead and coordinate efforts to incorporate GEDI perspectives into IRC’s program quality frameworks as well as support technical units to advance GEDI transformative programming. The position is a dynamic and engaging opportunity to make a substantive impact on advancing GEDI at a global humanitarian organization!

Major Responsibilities:

Lead and coordinate efforts to incorporate GEDI perspectives into IRC’s program quality framework(s) and associated business processes.

Collaborate with Program Ambition leads and TE leaders to promote and support coherent approaches to integrating GEDI in Strategy 100 implementation.

  • Ensure consistent integration of GEDI in program quality and program design frameworks and performance processes
  • In collaboration with the GEDI Senior Officer, monitor progress against GEDI goals.

Support technical units to set and drive sector-specific action plans to advance GEDI transformative programming.

  • Support the Inclusion Advisors to work with technical units and drive forward their GEDI in programming ambitions
  • Collaborate with GEDI in TE focal points to integrate a GEDI lens in global sectoral tools and guidances and leverage opportunities for transformative change.
  • Ensure strong monitoring and evaluation approaches to collect robust learning, in partnership with Inclusion Advisors and Measurement Advisors.
  • Collaborate with the Research & Innovation Unit to develop evidence and build new research strategies to enable ground-breaking change in humanitarian contexts.

Close collaboration: VP Technical Excellence; TE Leadership Group; GEDI focal points in each unit in TE; GEDI and other TU staff

Job Requirements:

Education: Graduate degree required in relevant field, or equivalent work experience

Work Experience: 5+ years of related experience that includes:

  • Proven record leading and influencing organizational partners to adopt intersectional feminist lens as core of programming approach and activities.
  • Experience in developing and implementing tools and framework to support gender, power, and inclusion analysis
  • At least 3 years field experience in humanitarian or development settings.
  • Experience building communities of practice

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Deep commitment to and knowledge of strategies to adopt intersectional feminist lens to proactively understand and work on transforming power structures, norms, and relations that perpetuate systemic inequalities, oppression, and privileges.
  • Understand power dynamics and legacy of colonialism in the humanitarian sector affect organizations and the ability to increase power for communities in our operating and service delivery models.
  • Experience in designing, facilitating and supporting Gender and Inclusion analyses in different contexts.
  • Efficiency in bridging practical guidance and conceptual frameworks with strong design skills related to program tools and guidance.
  • Experience in developing and administering trainings, ability to communicate technical expertise and standards, and implement best practice approaches
  • Deep cultural sensitivity and understanding of how to operate and put forward ideas and plans in a global organization with varying contextual needs and across multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and with multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams across different time zones

Language Skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Proficiency in at least one other language spoken in IRC regions (French, Arabic, Spanish, Swahili, etc.)

Working Environment –

  • Combination of standard office working environment and working remotely (i.e., telecommuting).
  • Some travel as needed up to 25%

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Since October 2012, the IRC has been responding to humanitarian needs of Nigerians. The IRC initially intervened in response to floods that affected over 7 million people across the country, destroying harvest and damaging homes. The IRC is currently implementing programs in Health, Protection, WASH, Nutrition, Food Security, and Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) in Adamawa and Borno States in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The IRC is dedicated to making women and adolescent girls healthier from the earliest phase of acute crises (a target group most vulnerable during crisis) and implements evidence-based reproductive health interventions in line with the SPHERE-standard Minimum Initial Service Package for Reproductive Health in Crises (MISP). The goal is to ensure that the IRC’s health responses in emergencies include the core package of Reproductive Health (RH) services in its interventions.

The IRC’s Reproductive Health (RH) program is currently implementing (MISP) for RH in 4 health care centers in MMC and Jere LGAs and 1 IDP camp clinic. In addition the program is starting up an emergency mobile programming outside of these areas of Maiduguri in coordination with the WPE team. The focus of this program is to provide quality comprehensive RH and WPE services to conflict-affected women and girls in a timely manner. In addition to the mobile program, the WPE and RH joint mobile teams will be in charge of rapid assessments and rapid response. The mobile teams will be focused in the newly opened LGAs and emergency areas previously inaccessible due to conflict and insecurity. These teams will provide life-saving services to populations outside of Maiduguri, who have not had access to services in approximately 3 years.
