Irene Homes is a nonprofit organisation who seeks to appoint a Housemother to take care of women (in a residential setting) who are intellectually disabled. It is a sleep-in position and accommodation is provided.

Vision – To enable mentally disabled individuals to grow to their full potential. Mission – Irene Homes is an Anglican Church organisation, providing residential and day care support and skills training for mentally disabled women and men of all Christian denominations and other faiths, with the ultimate goal of improved self-awareness, self-growth and job creation Humble beginnings Our facility was founded in 1902 when the Bishop of the Anglican Church in Pretoria asked the Sisters of the Community of St Mary the Virgin in Wantage, England to open a House of Mercy to care for women and girls who were abandoned and in difficult situations. In 1909 the Homes relocated to its current premises in Irene and expanded its services to accommodate women, their children and the elderly. By the end of the 1950's Irene Homes became a facility for women with intellectual disability only. Still rendering a service after more than 100 years. Irene Homes still operates under the auspices of the Anglican Church and currently provides a caring haven for 88 women of all races in 8 independent functioning houses. Here they live under the care of Housemothers and Domestic Workers in a family-style environment. The services include personal support in terms of continued observation, personal care and hygiene, supervision, daily living skills development and management of challenging behaviour – all done on a 24/7/365 basis. Since its beginning, Irene Homes was an integral part of the community and this tradition still exists today. The community took ownership of the organisation and they support it on various levels. We are registered with, and recognised by, the Department of Social Development and is funded by private, business and corporate donors as well as the fee income and donations from families. PBO: 9300 0024 (Public Benefit Organisation - registration with SARS) NPO: 003-928 (Non-Profit Organisation - registration with Department of Social Development) Our Board members are volunteers elected at the Annual General Meeting. They ensure full accountability and transparency of the organisation.
