The Global Alliance for Communities (Alliance) is a coalition of community-based grassroots organizations that drive impact in underserved populations across the Global South. We aim to empower and amplify grassroots leadership through research, advocacy, and resource mobilization, driving systemic change with local solutions and equitable funding. We envision a future where every local leader and community-based organization has the voice, power, and resources to shape their community’s destiny.

In 2024, the Alliance launched our 5-year strategic plan, with the ambition of becoming the go-to alliance for grassroots-related issues and serving as a hub for stakeholders such as CBOs, proximate leaders, funders, media, among others. This role is a unique opportunity to work closely and hands-on with a network of over 250 community-based leaders across 3 continents, who are working on the front-lines of the biggest challenges in international development. This individual will drive the Alliance’s strategic ambition and play an instrumental role in situating the Alliance as a key voice for proximate leaders on a global scale.

The Global Alliance for Communities is currently being incubated within Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), a leading grassroots organization based in Nairobi, Kenya.

We are seeking an individual who will drive the strategic vision of the Global Alliance for Communities, including:
● Develop the Alliance into a leading voice and influencer on the global scale, advocating for the importance of shifting power dynamics to local communities
● Forge strategic partnerships with research institutions, media, peer alliances and coalitions, funders, and other key stakeholders to raise the profile of both the Alliance and its members, and contribute to the evidence base on the importance of locally-led development
● Develop and implement media and communications strategy to amplify the voices and stories of proximate leaders and CBOs, and manage the all outward-facing communications, including website, newsletter, and social media management.
● Grow the Alliance into a trusted intermediary between funders and grassroots organizations, offering reliable insights, resources, connections, and interventions to support impactful community initiatives worldwide.
● Implement member recruitment, engagement, and capacity building programs, and serve as the main point of contact for members:
● Member recruitment: implement recruitment strategy for new members in alignment with the Alliance’s goals for membership growth (both in numbers and geographic diversity)

Member engagement: establish and promote platforms for member connection, lead on internal communications to Alliance members
Capacity building: Develop and implement capacity building curriculum for members, and create resource center for membership.

● Administrative support, including database management, meeting coordination, and management of effective operational structures across the Alliance’s diverse geographies.

Qualifications:
● Advanced degree in Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies, Public Policy, or a related field.
● A minimum of 7 years’ senior management experience working in international humanitarian and/or development aid, ideally with experience in a similar role.
● Passion for the mission of the Global Alliance for Communities and shifting power into the hands of community leaders
● Demonstrated leadership and advocacy expertise, particularly in the grassroots and locally-led development space
● Experience in project management, overseeing complex initiatives and driving them to successful outcomes. Ability to think long-term and drive the Alliance’s agenda of shifting power dynamics and amplifying grassroots leadership.
● Proven track record/demonstrated expertise in fostering partnerships with diverse stakeholders, such as grassroots organizations, donors, media, and research institutions
● Understanding and ability to work across diverse backgrounds, cultures and geographies.
● Strong interpersonal skills, and excellent written and oral communication abilities.
Ability to convey complex ideas and stories in an accessible way.
● Familiarity with Google Suite, WordPress, social media platforms, mass email tools (such as MailChimp), database/project management tools

Kennedy Odede started Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) in 2004 with passion, 20 cents and a soccer ball. Growing up in Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa, he experienced extreme poverty, violence, lack of opportunity, and deep gender inequality.

However, Kennedy also witnessed the palpable hope that persists in slums and recognized that people sought something different for themselves, their families and their communities. Visionaries like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela showed Kennedy that great, systemic change can come from within. Women like Kennedy’s mother inspired him to build the solutions to urban poverty through addressing one if its core obstacles—the prohibitive level of gender inequality. In 2007, Kennedy met Jessica Posner, a bright and driven American student studying abroad. Together they devised the model that SHOFCO utilizes today. SHOFCO’s innovation is to link girls’ education to deeply-needed community-wide services. This increases the value of girls and women, invites both genders to participate in the solution, and allows girls’ schools to be portals for large-scale social change.

Kennedy and Jessica’s partnership is a unique, pioneering collaboration in the field of international development. Bolstered by grassroots knowledge, they have dedicated their lives to bringing hope to urban communities.
