Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) is an international Italian NGO established in 1965. Since its establishment, COOPI has been undertaking activities to help and empower the poor and needy in different countries. COOPI Ethiopia started its operation in 1995 and has been primarily implementing emergency, relief and early recovery programs in water hygiene and sanitation, food security and livelihood, nutrition and protection sectors.

COOPI is currently implementing 10 projects in Ethiopia focusing on WASH, ESNFI, CCCM, Energy, Food security and Livelihood managing 7 field bases and a staff of over 100 employees.

COOPI is looking for qualified, skilled and motivated staff to carry out an internship in the WASH sector based in Addis Ababa in the WASH technical office. This position will be important to support the WASH department of COOPI and will promote growth for young professional in the humanitarian field.

Position: Internship in the Energy sector as WASH Technical Officer

Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning

  • Update and develop manuals and guidelines for water sector interventions with a focus on Carbon Credit certified water schemes.
  • Assist the Energy Project Manager in planning technical activities within the WASH sector for certified water schemes.
  • Support the identification of potential schemes for certification and assist in launching new certification processes.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to weekly project meetings.
  • Assist in planning water consumption field tests and collecting data for annual monitoring.
  • Collaborate with the project team on annual project survey data collection and census activities.
  • Facilitate and support the VVB in the annual validation and verification process for all certified schemes.

Implementation

  • Conduct research and studies in collaboration with the Project Manager to enhance the potential for certification schemes.
  • Collect and analyze yearly monitoring data, working closely with the project team to gather annual survey and census data.
  • Assist the Validation and Verification Body (VVB) in facilitating the annual validation and verification process for all certified schemes.
  • Actively participate in quarterly water quality testing to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Support stakeholder consultation meetings for each proposed scheme.

Reporting

  • Actively participate in weekly meetings organized by the PM or WASH Coordinator/Advisor.
  • Prepare detailed weekly and monthly reports to be shared with the Energy PM and WASH Coordinator/Advisor.
  • Support the drafting of reports on the progress of technical activities.
  • Assist the technical partner in collecting necessary documents for certification processes.

Project development

  • Enhancing technical solutions with an emphasis on certified carbon credit initiatives to tackle field challenges and facilitate project execution. This includes evaluating existing methodologies, recognizing possible hurdles, and devising strategies to address these issues.
  • Contribute to the design of project proposals for certification procedures.

External Coordination

  • Attend external meetings related to the Energy sector when requested by the supervisor.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the PM of Energy or WASH Coordinator/Advisor.
About You

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor in Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Computer literacy, with excellent knowledge of the Office package and the candidate should have enough knowledge in the use of a software programs such as GIS, Kobo tool data collection, Carbon finance calculations.
  • Proven capacity to work in a team is essential.

Preferred

  • Strong understanding of constructing WASH facilities and drafting related Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
  • Familiarity with WASH activities.
  • Knowledgeable about SPHERE Standards.
  • Experience in data management related to carbon credit certification.
  • Proficient in hygiene and sanitation promotion.
  • Expertise in the correct installation of fittings and pipes.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in high-pressure and stressful environments.
